For Ghostbusters fans, one of the stars of the original film has continued to be a somewhat reliable source of what’s to come in the film series. Back in 2023, Dan Aykroyd offered a tease on a new film set to follow on from 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, saying that a “heartfelt” entry was on the way.
Now, with the Ghostbusters franchise firmly back in the public consciousness, the press are coming back to Aykroyd for more information about what’s to come. As the franchise as a whole continues to grow and expand, the actor has let us know that a return to the big screen is on the cards.
Aykroyd’s Hyping Up Two New Ghostbusters Outings
Back in 1984, Dan Aykroyd saw the zany comedy that he penned hit theatres around the world and end up having a profound impact on pop culture. Starring in the film alongside Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, and Sigourney Weaver, Aykroyd also played his part in a superb marketing campaign.
As well as the iconic logo for the Ghostbusters being plastered around with little context and the earworm main theme, he also recorded a message for the phone number put up with one of the theatrical trailers. That line received around 1,000 calls per hour over its six weeks of operation.
He’s been integral to what would become a sprawling franchise from the start and always looks to be enthusiastic about its future. Most recently, he confirmed that there will be another feature film in the series. In the interview, he noted, “It’s just what avenue we’re going to take,” after confirming plans to return to the big screen.
Film is where Ghostbusters made its name and propelled itself back into the mainstream earlier this decade. However, it’ll also be returning to one of its old stomping grounds soon. Aykroyd is thrilled with the work on the animated show, saying that it’s “really neat,” and should be “coming out quite soon.”
Building for the Surge of Ghostbusters Interest
It’d be fair to say that 2016’s Ghostbusters was quite the misstep on-screen, but what it did manage to achieve is showcase the continued interest in seeing Ghostbusters return in a faithful way.
The 2021 outing of Ghostbusters: Afterlife went down more favourably, as did 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, but where the franchise has been doing best is in gaming. In 2017, IGT released Ghostbusters Triple Slime to the collection of games at the jackpot site and still stands alongside other branded slot hits, like Rick and Morty, Ted, T2, and Jurassic Park.
Triple Slime marked a strong return to the online gaming scene – Ghostbusters’ first since 2012 – and spurred on a couple more entries. Soon after, video game developers decided to bring the ghost-catching crews back to their corner of entertainment. In 2019, Ghostbusters: The Video Game got a remaster.
This was followed by the smash-hit game Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed in 2022. Offering the experience that everyone who watched the original film wants, you play in a team of four Ghostbusters looking to defeat one spooky and powerful foe with your proton pack. In 2023, a very well-received Ecto Edition launched, too.
With ghosts running riot across entertainment again, Aykroyd’s latest tease of another film will only help to further amp up the fans who want even more from the Ghostbusters!
