Industries Set to Thrive in 2025 in Canada

2024 was a mixed year for Canadian industries. Some of them absolutely boomed, whereas others, unfortunately, declined. Amongst those that experienced pleasing growth were travel agencies, tour operators, caravan and camping parks, and events industries. Amongst those that experienced a decline were cigarette and tobacco wholesaling, coal mining, steel rolling and drawing, and light vehicle manufacturing.

But what does the future hold for Canadian industries in 2025? Below is a look at some industries expected to grow next year and what they might experience, with some focus on casino gaming and how new laws in Alberta might affect industry growth, and on the future of industries in Canada and how tech might affect them.

Technology

The tech industry is a stalwart when it comes to growth because it’s forever advancing and there’s always demand. Society is relying more and more on all aspects of technology for business and ecommerce, which is increasing the demand for data scientists, systems engineers, and web and software developers.

Cybersecurity especially will grow as businesses strive to protect their sensitive data and focus more time and resources on doing so. Artificial intelligence (AI), which has also progressed significantly, will be another focus of companies as they delve deeper into the many applications of this emerging technology.

Esports and video gaming

Esports have become hugely popular in Canada in the last few years. Many believe this popularity will continue in 2025, as thousands of people are buying tickets to live esports events or choosing to stream them so they can support their favorite players and teams.

The gaming industry is massive in Canada, and companies such as Twitch have brought gaming more into the mainstream. Some content creators even make their living from the platform or similar ones. Gaming and esports have created new ways to generate revenue and can transform how players and fans interact with each other. In 2025, they’ll present valuable opportunities to investors.

Online casinos

Canadians have shown an appetite for online casino gaming. In 2024, the online casino market was projected to reach $2.61 billion, according to data on the website of consumer and market company Statista. By 2029, the number of users is forecast to amount to 15.7 million.

The market is clearly growing, which might be due to changes in regulations in the past few years. Canada has gradually opened itself up more to igaming by transferring regulation of gaming to provincial governments, rather than regulating gaming at the federal level. In 2022, Ontario established its own regulated gaming market.

Now Alberta is about to do the same, as the provincial government passed a bill that will allow Alberta to oversee iGaming activities in the province. This paves the way for other online casino companies to move into the space. To attract as many players as possible, users are able to play with a $5 deposit, reviewed by an industry expert like Jemma McColgan who has over a decade of industry experience. Alberta’s changes to regulation could see other provinces follow in its footsteps, especially if creating a regulated market proves successful.

Renewable energy

Climate change is becoming more widely recognized, and consumers and companies are looking to transition to cleaner energy. The electric vehicle market has transformed itself from a niche market into a major player in the industry. Wind energy, solar energy, and other renewable energy sources are all threatening to upend fossil fuels.

Fusion energy is something scientists have been desiring for a long time and millions of dollars have gone into researching it. They’ve come a step closer and are likely to pursue this further in 2025.

The future of Canadian industries

In 2025, the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies will become critical to help Canada’s manufacturing industries and other industries remain competitive and, in the long term, keep businesses sustainable. Being adaptable will be key and lots of industries will be looking to do this.

There will also be a focus on conducting industry operations more sustainably, as consumers demand more green practices from businesses and the businesses themselves look to do their bit for the planet. This is one of the great challenges they face, as they seek to stay compliant with stringent environmental regulations and decrease their carbon footprint more and more.

Canadian industries can make the most of several tech innovations. Robotics, the internet of things, AI and machine learning, and the use of digital technology such as automated systems, sensors, and data analytics are all going to play their part in 2025.

2025 looks to be a promising year for Canadian industries, even though they face some challenges. With the help of technology and, in some cases, regulation changes, the country will see some of its industries grow even more.
