The kids, all avid gamers, had been on at me to upgrade their experience. They were fed up playing some of the best games around but had their options limited because of the monitor they were using that had come with the computer.
Now, I’m a bit old school so I thought that was okay especially when they went to bed and I sneaked a few games in. I quite enjoyed it….
Then my eldest, fed up with stick in the mud dad pointed me in the direction of some revealing info.
Utilising a state-of-the-art gaming monitor would definitely enhance visual quality no matter what we opted for.
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) monitors essentially mean every pixel is its own light source so this offers superior contrast, far richer and attractive colours that accurately portray the scene. OLED screens have faster response times so that what the kids called “motion blur and ghosting” would be reduced.
UHD screens would offer a far better experience in terms of sharper details and textures especially when sitting close. This is accomplished with around four times the pixel density of Full HD.
Then there was QHD (Quad High Definition not Ultra) that offered a middle ground between the two without the high demands of UHD. It would also be less demanding on graphics hardware and could offer smoother gameplay and be more appropriate for the kids’ needs.
All three systems offer better gaming performance. OLED monitors support higher refresh rates which contribute, so my eldest pointed out, to smoother motion. Faster response times would enhance gaming reaction times. Meanwhile, UHD, perhaps the best on the market, would stand the test of time ensuring compatibility with future gaming improvements.
But again QHD seemed a better option for the here and now as it is easier for most gaming PCs to handle and could lead to a better experience for us.
However, it was a test run at a mall that had me convinced about the enhanced immersion of a better monitor. OLED and UHD were amazing and may be what we upgrade to in the future but for our system, it was QHD that offered a balanced immersion that, as the helpful salespeople advised, would not overwhelm our set-up.
It still represented a step up from Full HD and was more in tune with the budget that I had envisioned for the upgrade as well.
OLED may be at the cutting edge of display tech, and UHD is becoming standard for new games and content so was a good “future-proofing” option but QHD represented a good compromise for where we were at and being good for several years to come.
In conclusion, the kids were amazed with the upgrade despite not getting the bees’ knees and I felt that the compromises and cost saving would be better for right now.
Diving in at the deep end with the most advanced tech is not always the best.
