Selena Gomez on Distancing Herself From Social Media

“I just snapped, and I was over it.”

Selena Gomez may be one of the most followed people on Instagram, but she personally has been off social media for a few years. Now she’s talking about the moment she “snapped” and decided to stop using social media altogether.

Selena Gomez has shared that her turning point came three years ago, in part because of the constant need to be “on” all the time, the barrage of information, and the focus on her personal life and negative comments.

“To be honest, I was just, like, ‘This is too much information.’ This is too much of my personal life spread out everywhere, and it just felt uncontrollable. I felt like my thoughts and everything I was consuming revolved around a million different other people in the world saying good things and bad things,” she explained. “And I just thought, ‘I don’t get anything from it. Nothing is giving me life.’ And I just snapped, and I was over it.”

According to Selena, she wanted to delete her profiles altogether, but her team advised against it — and it turned out OK. “I’m happy I didn’t, because it is such a wonderful way to stay connected, and when I do go on, it makes me happy to know that I’m just being completely honest and being true to who I am.” When Selena wants to post something, she sends it to an assistant and they post it to her profiles.

Living a mostly social-free life has been good for Selena; she says quitting the online world made her IRL life better overall. “I say that because that’s a huge, significant part of why I feel like I’ve been as healthy as I have been,” she explained. “I’m completely unaware of actually what’s going on in pop culture, and that makes me really happy. And maybe that doesn’t make everybody else happy, but for me, it’s really saved my life.”
