Argentina favourite to win Football World Cup 2022 according to EA and FIFA 23 stats

Having correctly predicting the last three FIFA World Cup winners, EA says Argentina will beat Brazil to take home the 2022 trophy, however the bookies are saying Brazil are favourites in Qatar, followed by Argentina, France, Spain and England.

We’re just over a week away from the beginning of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This not only means FIFA 23’s World Cup mode is now available in-game, but EA has also shared its prediction for who will win the real thing.

In case you didn’t know, EA has run predictions for the last three World Cups in 2010, 2014, and 2018, using whichever FIFA games were out at the time.

All three wound up being correct and, after simulating all 64 matches in FIFA 23, EA concludes that 2022’s winner will be… Argentina.

EA’s findings say that Argentina will play against Brazil during the finals, with France (the winner of the previous World Cup) coming in third place. That’d certainly be a dramatic conclusion to the World Cup considering the long-running rivalry between Argentina and Brazil.

The two haven’t competed against each other in a World Cup since 1990 (not counting qualification matches). In that tournament, Argentina defeated Brazil during the knockout stage and made it to the finals, where it lost to Germany.

If EA’s prediction is accurate, this would make 2022 Argentina’s first World Cup win since 1986 and its third win overall.

EA also predicts that Argentina’s Lionel Messi will be the one to score the winning goal and take home the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards for top goal scorer (eight goals across seven games) and best player, respectively.

If you disagree, EA’s website allows fans to make their own predictions for how the World Cup will play out, with the opportunity to earn in-game items for doing so.

Sharing your prediction on Twitter even enters you into a sweepstakes to win a PlayStation 5 console and a copy of FIFA 23 for those who may still be stuck on the PlayStation 4.

While Argentina will always harbour hopes of their first World Cup since 1986, due to the continued presence of Lionel Messi, his supporting cast almost certainly lack the quality to be able to finally help him emulate Diego Maradona.

A Brazil squad, jam-packed with attacking talent and underpinned by a formidable looking midfield look like justifiable favourites, while defending champions France, even without mainstays N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba, linchpins of the side that triumphed in Russia four years ago, have the look of potential champions and will provide the main threat for Europe.

FIFA 23 is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
