England take on Senegal tonight at Al Bayt Stadium as part of the World Cup 2022 Round of 16.
With an increasing expectation on their shoulders, the Three Lions entered the tournament with a degree of pessimism shrouding the side despite following Nations League relegation, despite making the Euro 2020 final.
However, emphatic victories over Iran and Wales, either side of a tepid yet solid draw with USA, paired with shock defeats for other potential champions have raised hopes of England going deeper into the competition than many had previously thought.
Marcus Rashford has bagged three goals in the tournament so far to put him joint-highest in the World Cup 2022 top scorers list, while Harry Kane has recorded the most assists at World Cup 2022 so far.
Predicted England XI (4-3-3): Pickford; Trippier, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Bellingham, Henderson; Rashford, Kane, Sterling.
Predicted Senegal XI (4-2-3-1): E Mendy; Sabaly, Koulibaly, Diallo, Jakobs; Ciss, P. Gueye; P. Sarr, Ndiaye, I. Sarr; Dia.
The bulk of the side will no doubt remain unchanged. The formation – 4-3-3 has worked well for England in the tournament so far, allowing them an extra man in midfield, so I would expect that to remain constant.
Harry Kane will lead the line for England, even though he is yet to score in this World Cup. The captain is not playing at full pace, but he insisted in the pre-match news conference he is fully fit and feeling great.
The back four is likely to be the same, though it’s a toss-up between Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier at right-back. Walker could well win that battle – his exceptional pace is a characteristic that Southgate has always valued, though without Trippier in the team, England lose some expertise with set pieces.
Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are certain picks in the midfield, and Jordan Henderson could well get the nod ahead of Mason Mount, because of his extra experience and stabilising presence.
Senegal are without key man Sadio Mane for this tournament, though Ismaila Sarr and a strong supporting cast have made up for his absence.
Captain Kalidou Koulibaly scored the crucial goal to dispatch Ecuador and send the African nation cruising through to this encounter with Gareth Southgate’s England.
