Sony PlayStation heads into the world of VR launch bundles

Sony has revealed the first hardware bundle for PlayStation VR, with pre-orders opening for the virtual reality headset on 22 March. Unfortunately, that’s currently only for the US and Canada and not the UK.

The bundle was announced on the American PlayStation blog. Dubbed the “PlayStation VR Launch Bundle” — sometimes, simplicity works — it comes with everything players will need to get started. Well, except for a PlayStation 4 console, which is required.

That means not just the headset itself, but also stereo headphones, a PlayStation Camera bar, two PlayStation Move wand controllers, and all attendent cables. It also packs in two pieces of software — a VR demo disc, and a full version of PlayStation VR Worlds, one of Sony’s main launch game offerings.

The package will set Americans back $499.99 (£344) while Canadians will cough up $699.99 (£372). The core PlayStation VR headset will be available at the previously revealed suggested retail prices of $399.99 USD / $549.99 CAD, but this version won’t be available for pre-order.

While the US bundle price seems cheaper than the announced £349 base price for the UK, it’s worth remembering that tax is added to base prices in both countries, and can vary state by state. Whatever bundles we get here in the UK will be priced to include VAT at 20 percent and be universal across the country.

It’s also worth cautioning that North American deals or packages don’t necessarily reflect what we’ll see here in the UK, but it could serve as a good indication of what Sony is planning for the October hardware launch.
