Yooka-Laylee is a kickstarter game by Playtonic Games, the same people who were partly responsible for Banjo-Kazooie and some of the Donkey Kong Country. With only just over a week to go what is in store for this platformer?
What is Yooka-Laylee?
So looking around it’s very easy to find a lot of basic information about this game. Yooka is a chameleon, Laylee is our little bat friend and in all the screen shots and artwork for the game you can see them wandering around a jungle biome. That’s pretty much all I can find out at present. There are tokens that can be collected and there are several moves to be learnt. Apparently these are based upon what chameleons and bat could do: flapping wings, using supersonic abilities and using Yooka’s tongue, although I will say I have never seen a bat use its feet to guide a chameleon who has rolled up in a ball but I guess its ok under a creative licence. There does appear to be some other characters in the artwork and screen shots but not much has been said apart from they weren’t based on anything in particular.
As I said previously, the guys who have put these ideas together were the ones responsible for older Rare games from the N64 era. I would assume they would know what they are doing and its probably one of the reasons that they have had so much backing for this kickstarter.
What is a kickstarter?
Some people might be wondering what a kickstater is. In its simplest of terms for those who need help getting a project going they can ask people to pledge money to help them. In return they give the funders gifts these can be artwork, sound track, pre-release copies, early access, or pretty much anything they want to offer. It’s a bit of a gamble, if the game doesn’t get made then its money gone down the drain, but if it’s a success and the game is good, you can get yourself an amazing game at a very good price. It also shows the developers that there is an interest in the game and where that interest is coming from.
The kickstarter ends on the 17th of June which is in the middle of E3, I presume this was planned so that they could make some announcements at the end of the Expo, like a release date.
When will it be released?
No release date has been confirmed as of yet. They hope to get a playable version out by the end of the year. Saying that, they might have some experience under their collective belts, but I seem to remember Banjo-Kazooie being a few months late for its initial launch. I wouldn’t say that is a huge problem; it’s been a long time since a good new platformer was released in a long while so I’d rather they got it right before rushed. Once the game has been finished it’s one of the few games that will be available across platforms. Their previous contributions to game was exclusive to N64, but in their kickstarter they have said it will be up for grabs on Xbox, Playstation, Wii, Mac and PC.
Impression
I am very interested in this game but the lack of information is bugging me a little. I want to know more about the story, the characters and environments. Everything that you can see across interviews and game play is very samey, which is probably because of the stage of development. Everything else we have to go on is based on the previous game developed from Rare so I hope they have been able to think independently and make it the game we all want it to be.
If you can help these guys out before the kickstarter ends I would definitely say go for it, if you’re a bit late to the game then check it out and grab a copy. It will definitely be something different and new to the current gaming community. I’m hoping this wont be just for kids, from their previous titles they have always put a few fun things in for the hard-core fans.
