‘Doctor Who’: BBC To Axe Next Series In Favour Of ‘Sherlock’-Style Feature-Length Episodes, Following Low Ratings?
Hit Sci-fi TV series ‘Doctor Who’ could be about to undergo a massive transformation next year, with reports claiming the BBC are planning to scrap the next series completely.
The Mirror have claimed that the network will run feature-length specials of the sci-fi drama instead, more in keeping with ‘Sherlock’, which has proved to be a ratings hit with its limited number of longer episodes.
The newspaper have said that, rather than a traditional 12-episode run in 2016, they could air a handful of longer episodes, alongside a Christmas special.
The ratings for the current series, which sees Peter Capaldi playing the Time Lord and Jenna Coleman as his companion, Clara Oswald, have been in decline, and while some have claimed this is due to it running at the same time as the Rugby World Cup, they’re still reportedly proving to be a cause for concern with producers.
A source explained “‘Doctor Who’s decline is very worrying and needs to be addressed. At this stage all options are being considered.
“Everyone accepts that drastic action may be needed.”
The newspaper have also claimed that the BBC are considering shaking up the cast for 2017’s run, with Jenna already confirming that the current series would be her last, as she’s about to play Queen Victoria in a new TV biopic about the British monarch.
Among the guest stars who’ll be appearing later in the current series include ‘Game Of Thrones’ actress Maisie Williams, comedian Rufus Hound and rocker Corey Taylor, who has recorded a scream especially for next week’s episode.
