Jordskott is a Swedish TV series in which police detective Eva Thörnblad (Moa Gammel) investigates the death of her daughter and other strange goings on in the town of Silverhöjd.

The fairytale-noir monster mash-up is an eco-friendly journey into a heart of darkness where parental anguish is a constant.

MarkMeets were invited to chat to Betty Nicóle Hildegard Jankell about the show.

Your name is amazing! Can you tell me a little more about it?
I have an older sister named ”Felicé”, as in the Spanisch word for happiness (¡Feliz Navidad). So, when I was born my mom liked the idea of giving me a name with the same meaning, I will always be happy… No pressure at all.

What got you into wanting to be an actress?
Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved dressing up as a princess or a dragon fighter, anything really, as long as she wasn’t herself. And when she grew up she still thought it was amazingly fun to pretend to be someone else.
Then I realized that I could work with something that I love. Acting. That’s the short story. It’s just childish people who become actors, that’s my theory.

How did you get involved with Jordskott?
I remember when the casting director called me for the first time, she told me a bit about the project and the character they wanted me to audition for. ”Jordskott” is a complicated story to tell in a few minutes over a phone call … but I felt there was something special about the project that really drew my attention.

Your character goes through a lot of different emotions and changes during the first season. How did you prepare for this?
By reading the script, over and over again. As I said, it’s a complex story… I thought a lot about my character, I really wanted to know more about her than I could read in the script, I tried to find the complexity of her. That is one of the funniest part of being an actor, the opportunity of using your fantasy to build and create your own stories about your character’s lives.

How was it working with such a diverse cast?
I absolutely loved the cast! I wish that Esmeralda could have had more scenes with the rest of the cast… I wanted to work with all of the talented actors. I had a few scenes with Göran Ragnerstam (Göran Wass), he is super cool and I loved working with him.

What did you enjoy and find difficult about the show?
The whole production was amazingly inspiring to work with. All of the crew was so determined to make and create a fantastic series, as if the forces of nature enthralled everyone who worked on the series. In other words, it was a really great atmosphere on set.

My biggest challenge with this project was that I had many scattered days over the recording period, since the recording went on for such a long period. It could be really difficult to get back on set after a long time, go back to your character and do a scene that in the script is a scene after a scene you were doing one month ago…

What are you working on now?
I work on a theatre in Stockholm, with a play called “Pelikanen” (August Strindberg). I love to be on the theatre, it’s the contrasts I want to achieve. The perfect mix of roles, scripts, TV series, films and theatre.

Would you like to go into films or other media like music videos?
I always follow my inner compass, my intuition. I’m doing the job that sounds fun, challenging and inspiring. The main question is not if it’s a film or a music video, it’s the story and purpose that’s counts for me.

What would you like the chance to act in any TV show/Film past, present or future?
Good questions is always hard to answer… it’s not an accepted answer if I say all of the options, isn’t? Ok, I would say the past… I love history!

Are there any dreams you have? For example any awards you are aiming for or any actors you would like to work with?
My head will soon be exploding of all my super heavy dreams I have in there. Or really, my goals are in my head and my dreams in my heart. If I randomly have to handpick a dream, I choose my dream of working with my biggest idol and inspiration, Kate Winslet. Or is it in my head… it’s a goal maybe.

What would you be doing if you weren’t acting?
If I weren’t acting I would put a lot more time at my other passion, my writing. I guess I would have done it in a professional way, a journalist or a poet maybe?

What advice would you give to those wanting to start acting?
To be observant of your surroundings is the first acting class you should take, and probably the best… And it’s for free, just put down your phone and start to look at the people around you. How does people behave? Philosophers and scientist can’t answer that question correctly… but you can give it a try!
