Netflix Picks up ‘Mukai-kun’ Completed Japanese Romance Series From Nippon TV

Netflix has acquired the upcoming rom-com drama “Turn to me Mukai-kun” from Nippon TV. The series delves into the story of a man who has lost touch with the intricacies of relationships, a relatable theme for those unlucky in love or in search of that special someone.

The series will be available for streaming on Netflix Japan starting Wednesday, immediately after its Wednesday primetime air slot on Nippon TV. It will also be globally streamed on all Netflix platforms. Additionally, Hulu Japan, owned by Nippon TV, will stream the series right after its terrestrial and cable broadcast in Japan.

“Turn to me Mukai-kun” is based on the award-winning manga by Nemu Yoko, currently serialized in the popular monthly comic magazine Feel Young. The talented Akaso Eiji takes on the leading role, supported by Ikuta Erika, Fujiwara Sakura, Okayama Amane, and Ziasen Naomi.

The series follows the turbulent dating journey of a 33-year-old man whose life seems perfect in every aspect except for one—the absence of his true love. Despite his striking looks, charming personality, and successful career, he longs for something more. Fate takes a turn as he unexpectedly reconnects with an unforgettable ex.

The show consists of 60-minute episodes and was written by Watanabe Mako. It is co-directed by Kusano Shogo and Shigeyama Yoshinori, with Mikami Eriko serving as the chief producer. Other producers include Suzuki Katsuhiro, Yanai Kuniko, Myoenzono Hiroki, and Fukui Mei.

Miyata Keisuke, head of sales, global business, at Nippon TV, expressed excitement about the groundbreaking moment of Nippon TV’s primetime series streaming immediately on Netflix in Japan and globally afterwards. With the talented Eiji Akaso leading the rom-com series, Miyata is confident that viewers worldwide will fall in love with this captivating romance drama.

Despite the competition between Netflix and Hulu Japan, Nippon TV and Netflix have a history of cooperation, including the licensing of animation content and a second season of the unscripted reality show “Old Enough.”
