We’re nearly at the end of the UK Voice 2014 blind auditions and tonight we witness the penultimate round of try outs.
Each coach has just a handful of free spots on their teams and it shows as the panel are more picky than ever.
First to attempt to win them over is 18-year-old Emily Adams, a hotel worker who belts out the reality telly audition favourite Etta James hit I’d Rather Go Blind. Emily has the audience on their feet but the panel aren’t giving much away about their intentions.
Something a bit different next as we play a game of guess-who-gets-through with a pair of country singers. A rare genre here in the UK, we meet 35-year-old John Rafferty and 31-year-old Talia Smith.
John, from Belfast, is up first and sings John Denver’s Country Roads while Talia from London performs Pistol Annies track Hell On Heels.
Both get the interest of Sir Tom Jones but only one manages to win a spot in the next round.
Tonight’s latest show also sees more duos in the form of a pair of sibling acts.
There are brother and sister Buheiji, who sing Dog Days Are Over and sisters Leanne and Natalie, who belt out out My Man Music, but will either duo get through?
A third set of siblings takes to the stage afterwards but they aren’t a duo, rather competing against each other as soloists.
Brothers Shenton Dixon and Bizzi Dixon have both experienced some success already with Shenton a famous tribute act while Bizzi was previously signed to EMI records.
Now they’re both on The Voice and despite competing for a limited number of spots on the panel are encouraging of one another… but will that last if one of them doesn’t make the next round?
The acts keep on flowing onto the stage as West End performer Natham Amzi sings to the backs of the judges performing Sara Bareilles track Gravity before Burquese singer Kiki deVille blasts out Stone Cold Sober for the coaches after showing off her nipple tassels.
Primary school worker Callumn Crowley tells cameras he can’t wait to ditch his job (sorry, kids!) as he steps up to sing for a spot in the battle rounds. Singing Usher’s hit Climax both Kylie and Will are on their feet grooving along but will either press their buzzers?
Another pair of acts go before the panel next and both feel like they should’ve already had success having gone through stage school, putting us off them a bit from the start.
First up is Marc William who went to school with Pixie Lott, singing Whole Lotta Love he asks the cameras: “When is my time going to come?”
Marc is followed by Paul “I went to school with Adele” Raj who also studied alongside the likes of Jessie J and Katy B at Brit School, but have the years of studying paid off for either of the boys?
40-year-old “man of contradictions” Amrick Channa is the next budding performer we’re introduced to. The clubbing Sikh performs Pride (A Deeper Love) for the panel and his look certainly surprises the coaches when they turn around.
It’s youngsters that close the show this evening starting with 17-year-old Jazz Bates-Chambers. The rather fabulous performer sings Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy in an attempt to win one of the ever decreasing number of spots in the next round in what is one of our favourite auditions of the current series.
Finally this evening is 16-year-old Amelia O’Connell, who reveals her dad is a Sir Tom Jones impersonator. The teenager reckons she has “no other chance”, saying “it’s now and I need to do right,” as if she’s been trying for decades rather than being barely out of school. Amelia sings First Time I Ever Saw Your Face for the coaches but will they press their buzzers?
The Voice 2014 blind auditions air tonight from 7:10PM on BBC One.
