Reports that Tom Daley’s ITV diving contest Splash! is facing the axe have resurfaced after its second series crashed in the ratings.
Earlier this month a source told The Daily Star that the show would find itself in danger if it fell below the 3million viewer mark.
This came true last week when its second semi final attracted just 2.87million viewers – and although Saturday’s grand final rebounded to a more comfortable 3.79million, The Sun has now ran a similar story.
Bosses at the broadcaster are now seeking new formats that could potentially replace Splash! – which is pitched by its production company with the slogan ‘when stars fall, ratings rise’.
Their insider said: “Splash! has been great fun and really captured the mood after the 2012 Olympics but ITV aren’t sure it will stand the test of time. At the moment they’re looking at ideas to replace it as well as more ideas for Tom.”
However, ITV insists that it could yet return, with a spokesperson commenting: “No decision has been made.”
Although the first series of Splash! averaged over 5million viewers, the second slumped after being pit against BBC One’s The Voice UK, which has enjoyed a rise in ratings this year thanks to its new winter scheduling and a revamped line-up of coaches.
Diversity dancer Perri Kiely was crowned this year’s winner after becoming the only contestant to receive a perfect 30 score for one of their dives.
