Why TOTP should make a return

TOTP was on our screens for 42 years becoming an iconic show on British TV and we want to see it make a comeback bigger than what Take That did!

The music chart programme saw performances from some of the best sellings artists of the week with performances from The Jam, Duran Duran, Roxette, The Spice Girls, Will Young, The Charlatans, Ocean Colour Scene, Cyndi Lauper amongst the thousands of acts who performed (mimed on the show)!.

Presenters in the early years including Tony Blackburn, Noel Edmonds , Kenny Everett, John Peel to name a few with Fearne Cotton, Reggie Yates and Tim Kash taking over proceedings in the 2000’s.

We think if it came back on a Friday..which coincides with BBC Radio 1’s chart show, it could see in excess of 8m viewers.

The public love performances and the show offered many features that you just don’t see anymore from the audience getting the chance to get up close to watch the artists perform on stage, even closer than The X Factor audience for example where you have to sit down.

What we loved

– The theme tune as we knew that we were in for a treat.

– The number of acts on each show make it fun

– It’s better than chat shows…BLAH BLAH BLAH then you hear 2mins of a song at the very end in the credits.
Top of the pops just had music, whether your parents though it was rubbish or not.

– It was a family show as there was acts to suit all generations.

– Some of the world’s most famous musicans starred in the series.

– Looking back at old clips, seeing how fashions have changed are still hilarous…they wore WHAT!

– In the days of cassettes you could record your fave songs on tape!

What was funny

– How the acts mimed…BADLY!!!

– Some artists were on too often.

– Many acts only had one hit and were never invited back!

– Seeing Pat Sharp’s mullet.

What was rubbish!!

– Trying to get hold of tickets to be live in the studio.

– When you sa the show, it would take over 2 hours to film and very often each act would do two takes, this was very boring.

Top of the Pops saw over 2200 episodes recorded and we want more…each week rather than just re-run’s and specials just at Christmas time.

Back in April, MarkMeets were informed that BBC execs are said to be in discussions over a revamp of the iconic music chart show with a new look and format.

A spokesperson for the BBC told us, “There are no current plans to bring back Top Of The Pops”.
