Boys From The Blackstuff – stage cast announced for UK tour premiere

Based on Alan Bleasdale’s ground-breaking TV series, the show has been adapted for the stage by leading playwright James Graham (Sherwood, Dear England, This House).

The cast will feature Andrew Schofield (Blood Brothers, Scully) as George, Barry Sloane (Pleasureland – C4, Jerusalem – Royal Court), as Yosser, Mark Womack (Emmerdale – ITV, Good Cop – BBC) as Dixie, George Caple (Doctor Who- BBC, Homebaked – Liverpool’s Royal Court) as Snowie, Kevin and other parts, Dominic Carter (Coronation Street – ITV, Game of Thrones – HBO) various , Helen Carter (The Flint Street Nativity – Liverpool Everyman, Top Girls – Royal Court) as Miss Sutcliffe and other roles, Aron Julius (DCI Banks ITV, As You Like It – Soho Place) as Loggo, Oliver Mawdsley (The Comedy of Errors – more or less – Stephen Joseph) various, Nathan McMullen (Misfits – E4) as Chrissie and Lauren O’Neil (This House – National Theatre, The Twilight Zone – Almeida) as Angie and other roles.

Set in ’80s Liverpool, Bleasdale’s ground-breaking drama follows five men trying to make ends meet while job opportunities are scarce.

Graham, who is widely lauded in theatre circles has recently won plaudits for his BBC series Sherwood starring Leslie Manville which explores the legacy of mining communities in Nottinghamshire; his football drama inspired by Gareth Southgate Dear England  – currently playing the National Theatre – and his play Best of Enemies which is Broadway bound following acclaimed runs at the Young Vic and in the West End.

Boys from the Blackstuff is a British drama television series of five episodes, originally transmitted from 10 October to 7 November 1982 on BBC2.

It has not yet been announced if Boys From The Blackstuff will tour the UK or transfer to London’s West End.

Boys From The Blackstuff  will premiere at Royal Court Liverpool running from 15 September to 28 October 2023.
