Movie actor Chris Evans is keen to show off his musical skills in a Broadway show or movie.
35-year-old ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ star is nearing the end of his contract as the Marvel superhero now and whilst it may appear unclear if the actor will sign up for more action, he admits he is considering a very different role.
Talking openly above what could be next, he said: “I think I might do a (Broadway) show next March (17),” he told U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America yesterday. “As of late, musicals are doing so well. There’s always been rumblings of a Guys and Dolls remake, maybe a West Side Story remake. Those movies I love, I grew up on those types of musicals.”
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum were reportedly in talks to lead the cast of 20th Century Fox’s Guys and Dolls remake in 2013, but it is unclear what the status of the project is.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg is developing a remake of West Side Story. The hit filmmaker has been working on the project for several years and has tapped his Lincoln and Munich screenwriter Tony Kushner to pen the script.
Evans now gets to pursue the dream of directing, one he’ll live out by directing another film at the end of this year. He credits Captain America for the opportunity, saying, “Without these movies, I wouldn’t be directing. They gave me enough overseas recognition to greenlight a movie.” But he then adds, “And if I’m speaking extremely candidly, it’s going to continue to do that for as long as the Marvel contract runs… If I’m acting at all, it’s going to be under Marvel contract, or I’m going to be directing. I can’t see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I’m contractually obligated to do.” Chris Evans is a wonderful onscreen presence, an actor of great skill and dexterity, not to mention starling beauty. You’d hate to think that playing a superhero has extinguished any desire he might have to appear before the camera. Don’t be surprised if he’s not the last actor to feel this way.
