David Suchet to play Wilde’s Lady Bracknell in West End

Poirot star will appear in a revival of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest directed by Adrian Noble

The role has been played by a who’s who of greats including Edith Evans, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Penelope Keith. This summer the immortal words “A handbag?” – traditionally uttered with the utmost astonishment and disgust – will be spoken by David Suchet.

The Poirot star is set to appear as Lady Bracknell in a West End revival of The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of false identities and true love, directed by Adrian Noble.

Suchet, who had a final outing as Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective on TV last year, told the Daily Mail: “I always knew it would be a challenge to find another character as extraordinary to play. I also wanted comedy. Lady Bracknell is both.” He said he “couldn’t resist trading in my moustache for her heels”.

Suchet follows in the footsteps of Geoffrey Rush, who dragged up for a 2011 production by the Melbourne Theatre Company, and Brian Bedford who played the part on Broadway that year.

This month Suchet will appear on stage in Toronto as part of a world tour of Chichester Festival Theatre’s production of The Last Confession. The Importance of Being Earnest will open on 1 July 2015 after a short UK tour.
