Sell-out show Funny Girl which stars Sheridan Smith, will be transferring to the West End, opening at the Savoy Theatre for a strictly limited 12 week run from 9 April 2016.
The transfer will follow a run at the Menier Chocolate Factory where the show broke the theatre’s box office records by becoming the fastest-selling show in their history. The Menier revival opens in December.
Funny Girl, with a revised book by Harvey Fierstein, will run at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark, South London, from November 20.
And then the musical, which tells the story of Broadway star Fanny Brice and boasts songs such as People and Don’t Rain On My Parade, will march into the Savoy, where performances will begin on April 9 for an initial 12-week run.
Written by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, the musical is based on the life and career of Broadway star Fanny Brice, and her relationship with Nick Arnstein. It features songs including “People”, “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “I’m the Greatest Star”.
David Babani, artistic director of Menier Chocolate Factory, said today, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm for Funny Girl – the show broke Menier box office records when it sold out its entire run in just 90 minutes. We felt it was very important to respond to demand so we’re delighted…to share it with as wide an audience as possible.”
Producers Sonia Friedman and Scott Landis added, “2016 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the original London production of Funny Girl. It’s enormously exciting to be bringing this legendary musical back to the West End for the first time since 1966, in a brand new production starring the incredible Sheridan Smith.”
The award winning English actress Sheridan Smith will be leading the show that made Barbra Streisand a star from a tiny, award-winning fringe theatre into the West End.
Funny Girl, with a revised book by Harvey Fierstein, will run at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark, South London, from November 20.
Tickets for the West End transfer will go on general sale from 10am Monday 16 November. There will be £15 tickets available for every performance.
