London is finally getting its own Musical Con.
New York theatre has its Broadway Con convention, and its high time that musical theatre fans in the UK get their own opportunity to celebrate musicals and the West End.
What is Musical Con?
Thousands of musical theatre fans and enthusiasts will come together under one roof for the first time for a weekend-long celebration of musicals and musical theatre.
Where is Musical Con taking place?
The event will all happen at the ExCeL London convention centre in East London. The nearest tube is Canning Town on the Jubilee Line, then change on to a Beckton-bound DLR train for the two-stop journey to ExCeL: Custom House (west entrance of the ExCel) or Prince Regent for ExCeL (east entrance). What are the dates of Musical Con?
Musical Con is happening at the weekend in October 2022, running from Saturday 22 to Sunday 23 October 2022.
What stars are appearing at Musical Con?
The line-up so far is pretty impressive. The organisers have gathered together some key “Ambassadors” for the event, all of whom are well known to musicals fans and regularly appear in the West End. They include Aimie Atkinson (Pretty Woman The Musical, Six The Musical), Kerry Ellis (Wicked, Anything Goes), Alice Fearn (Come From Away, Wicked), Ben Forster (The Phantom of the Opera, Elf The Musical), Jodie Steele (But I’m A Cheerleader, Heathers, Six The Musical), Trevor Dion Nicholas (Hamilton, Aladdin), Omari Douglas (Cabaret), Shanay Holmes (Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical), Jenna Russell (Sunday in the Park with George, Fun Home, Piaf) and Layton Williams (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Rent, Thriller.
Also over 30 special guests have also been announced, including musical theatre supergroup SVN (Millie O’Connell, Natalie May Paris, Grace Mouat, Alexia McIntosh, Jarneia Richard-Noel, Maiya Quansah-Breed), Kelly Agbowu, Jocasta Almgill, Luke Bayer, Nikki Bentley, Lauren Byrne, Maddison Bullyment, Tarinn Callender, Lauren Drew, Hiba Elchikhe, Emma Hatton, Sophie Isaacs, Cassidy Janson, Aisha Jawando, Idriss Kargbo, Emma Kingston, Bobby Little, Carl Mann, Jason Pennycooke, Laura Pick, Karl Queensborough, Jon Robyns, Sharon Rose, Charlie Stemp, Ivano Turco, Michael Xavier & Mitch Zhangazha.
Organisers say that more special guests will be announced throughout the year.
Who is organising Musical Con?
Musical Con will be organised by West End Musical Productions, who are the people behind the West End Musical Drive In, and “West End Musical Celebration” series of concerts. The event is also supported of the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) who are the trade body for London theatres.
The company behind West End Musical Productions is Neighbourhood Events, run by Shanay Holmes and Chris Steward. This theatre power couple made The Stage 25 this year, and won last year’s Best producer gong at the Black British Theatre Awards, to celebrate their work keeping audiences entertained during the tough years of Covid and lockdowns.
Their event West End Musical Celebration at the Palace Theatre featured talent including Rachel John, Layton Williams, Alice Fearn and Trevor Dion Nicholas.
What happens at Musical Con?
Fans will have the opportunity to meet the stars, celebrate the shows, and learn from the pros as never before.
The convention centre will be split into four sections including a ‘Main Stage’ area, ‘Stage Door’ area, ‘Backstage’ area and Theatreland section.
The Main Stage will be where you can enjoy unique performances, surprise cast reunions, interviews, Q&As, discussion panels and show spotlights; at Stage Door you can get up close and personal with your stage faves with meet and greets and photo and autograph opportunities; Theatreland will host interactive show experiences, a marketplace full of stalls selling fandom merch and memorabilia, shops selling musical theatre clothing and accessories, and a musical theatre themed café; and in the Backstage area, you can enjoy an extensive selection of musical theatre workshops, masterclasses, and talks run by the cast and creatives of the shows. Also fans can learn about getting into musical theatre and network with schools and colleges, and there’s a competition to find the UK’s next musical theatre star with a chance to perform on the main stage.
