Ipswich Town complete signing of Leon Best on a one-year deal – Interview

Striker signs one-year deal with year option after impressing Mick

Leon Best has signed a one-year contract at Town after impressing Mick McCarthy while training with the Club.

Leon Best
The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international scored in Blues’ U23 defeat by Birmingham last week and did enough in that game and in training over the rest of the week to win a deal at Portman Road.

He arrives as a free agent, with his contract with Town including another year’s option on top.

MarkMeets can exclusively reveal that It was the ambition and drive is what drew him to the club.

Leon added that it is a key career move for him.

Leon started his career at Southampton, alongside David McGoldrick, and spent three years with the club before joining Coventry in 2007. He scored 19 League goals in 92 appearances for the Sky Blues, then headed to Newcastle in 2010.

A reported £3m move to Blackburn followed two years later but his progress there was hindered by a knee injury. He had loan spells at Derby and Brighton before joining Rotherham in November 2015 on a contract until the end of the season.

His goals, including the winner at Portman Road in March, helped keep the Millers in the Championship when they looked destined for the drop.

“Leon did well last week. I was impressed,” Mick told the Club website.

“He knows this league. He’s got that physical presence and he will add to the options we have got up front. We are delighted to have him here.”
