Rugby has never been more widely broadcast in the UK, but with coverage split across free-to-air television, subscription sports channels, and dedicated streaming platforms, knowing where to find the match you want is half the battle. Here is everything you need to know to follow the sport through the 2025/26 season.
Free to Watch: The Six Nations
There’s a plethora of live rugby on TV, but for casual viewers, international rugby is the best place to start. Luckily, it’s mostly free-to-air, and the BBC and ITV between them offer more content than ever.
The Six Nations splits all 15 fixtures across both broadcasters, free to watch via BBC iPlayer and ITVX with a valid TV licence, with S4C covering Wales in Welsh.
From July 2026, ITV also becomes the exclusive home of the Nations Championship, a new biennial tournament featuring the twelve strongest nations. A UK broadcaster for the 2027 Rugby World Cup has yet to be confirmed.
TNT Sports and HBO Max: The Home of the Premiership
TNT Sports holds the domestic club rugby rights until 2031, broadcasting every live Gallagher Premiership match alongside Premiership Women’s Rugby.
It is accessible via Sky, Virgin Media, or a standalone HBO Max subscription. ITV also broadcasts seven Premiership matches per season free of charge, with a weekly highlights show, Gallagher PREM Unleashed, airing in midweek.
Premier Sports: European and Club Rugby
Premier Sports holds UK rights to the Investec Champions Cup, European club rugby’s premier knockout competition, and the United Rugby Championship, the cross-border league featuring clubs from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, and South Africa.
The French Top 14 and Japan Rugby League One are also included in the same subscription. It is available through Sky, Virgin Media, Amazon, or as a standalone app, costing from around £10.83 per month on an annual contract to £17.99 on a rolling basis.
Sky Sports: Lions Tours and Super Rugby Pacific
Sky Sports covers two competitions worth knowing about: British and Irish Lions tours, and Super Rugby Pacific, the southern hemisphere’s premier club competition.
Most Super Rugby fixtures kick off overnight UK time, which is worth bearing in mind. Sky is available via a full subscription or through NOW, with flexible day passes from £14.99.
Bringing It Together
Anyone content with international rugby will find the Six Nations and the new Nations Championship cover most of what they need for free, while TNT Sports and Premier Sports together handle the full domestic and European picture, with Sky Sports adding southern hemisphere depth for the most committed viewers.
