Juiceboxxx joined us for a in depth chat about his latest project fresh from his LA official video shoot which was filmed entirely in Tik Tok. Director Eugene Kotlyarenko came up with the concept (check out his film Wobble Palace). The video was shot during a hectic 24 hour trip in LA followed by post-production casting. And of course, some of Juice’s friends make cameos too. Juice s
Hi JB- where does today find you?
I just went for a jog. Sweaty and depressed.
What did you get up to over the weekend?
Wrote a couple songs. Ate some ice cream.
Can you tell us about your latest single ‘Coinstar Song ‘
It is about staying alive in the USA. Also taking your coins and putting them into a machine and then getting cash.
it’s pretty upbeat for a song that seems to be about the meaninglessness of life – was this intentional?
Of course. Life is many things all at the same time.
We love the official video made in Tik Tok – what made you think of doing it like this? Is this the first time a promo video has been made using this medium?
The director Eugene Kotlyarenko came up with the idea. I love working with new forms and ideas so of course I was game.
What’s the reaction been to the video?
People seem to enjoy it. It warrants multiple viewings.
We know you have your fingers in many pies: running the label Thunder Zone, collaborating with many artists as well as putting out an energy drink and various merch and stuff . Plus you have a radio show and have a regular Vlog (The Boxxx Report), your music and touring around the world too. So our question is: where do you get your energy from? (you’re not allowed to say from your energy drink!)
It’s actually not all that much work. To be honest, I feel like I could work a lot harder.
What motivates you and keep you moving forward?
I have some deep-seated issues I’m trying to work through. Every day is a new day to try to change my life. Music is the only thing that makes sense to me.
What plans do you have for the next 12 months ?
New record, touring. One day at a time.
Where do you think you’ll be in 2030? And what will the world be like?
I choose not to think about that.
Where can people find out more about you?
juiceboxxx dot come thunder zone dot biz have a nice day
“Coinstar Song” is out now via Dangerbird Records. Produced by Juiceboxxx and Joel Hamilton (who has worked with everyone from Black Keys to Cam’Ron to Iggy Pop), the track is taken from his forthcoming new album and is about using a machine that converts your desperate, random left-over coin collection into cold hard cash, all in the name of “trying to get by.” Well. Who couldn’t relate to that? Simply put, “Coinstar Song” is the new precarity anthem for a generation of young people living one day at a time.
