Phoebe Bridgers strugges to write optimistic songs

Celebrity interview

Phoebe Bridgers is an American indie rock musician from Los Angeles, California and following the release of her Conversations with Friends song “Sidelines” in April, Bridgers spoke about her connection with Sally Rooney’s novel, and how “Sidelines” came together in a new celebrity interview.

When asked about the optimistic tone of “Sidelines” and how it “fits in with what you’ve done and what people expect,” Bridgers replied, “I’m striving to do more stuff like that. I think it’s more challenging to sound smart and write well about happiness than it is about sadness. In the interest of not seeming trite, I lean toward darker subject matter, just out of comfort. And I think a challenge to myself, now, is being articulate about things that are good.”

Bridgers revealed that her drummer Marshall Vore and his girlfriend started the song, and Vore encouraged Bridgers to make it her own when given the opportunity to make music for Conversations with Friends. Bridgers said, “There wasn’t that much I wanted to redo, and I thought it would be easy. Usually with my songs, even songs that Marshall starts, I’ll rewrite them like 10 times with lots of options. And this was the hardest thing. Everything I put into it felt corny. And what he had already encapsulated was so beautiful that I felt like I was going to ruin it, so it was such a big challenge.”

Phoebe Bridgers is on the road for her “Reunion” tour right now, and it’s safe to say that she is H-O-T both on and off the stage. The 27-year-old singer-songwriter took to Instagram on June 7 to promote her upcoming concert with quite possibly the cheekiest (literally) photo I’ve ever seen.

The post perfectly captures her comedic social media presence. Standing in a white tux sans coat jacket, Phoebe’s collared shirt and pants cover up the front of her body. But she’s baring it all in the back. Thanks to the mirror that she is posing in front of, her backside is completed revealed, giving followers a glimpse of her black bra, garter belt and stockings, and her thong. Her toned butt is the main focus of the photo, and honestly, as it should be. Want to drop the leg day circuit, Phoebe?

The “I Know the End” singer typically dresses on the more modest side—wearing mostly variations of her signature skeleton suits and shirts. So this is, um, refreshing, to say the least. My only request now is to get some merch with this picture on it.

Recently, Phoebe attended her first Met Gala alongside boyfriend Paul Mescal, star of Hulu’s Normal People. In her silver halter dress, her toned arms were the main focus—besides that gorgeous dark berry pink lipstick, of course. While she may not be super forthcoming about her workout and health routine, it’s clear she puts in work.

Phoebe Bridgers will support The Rolling Stones at their BST Hyde Park show on 25 June. Visit for tickets and more information.
