Victoria Beckham has confessed that she knew she was a “bit of a laughing stock” when she started out as a fashion designer – but reckons she has had the last laugh over her critics.
The former Spice Girl’s designs have become very popular among the glitterati – with Beyonce, Cameron Diaz and Miranda Kerr among her fans – but Victoria is in no doubt about what people thought when she set out on her new career.
The Business of Fashion quoted the 40-year-old designer as saying: : “For a long time there, I was a bit of a laughing stock.
“And while everybody was busy laughing, what was I doing? I was laying the foundation to what I have in place now.”
However, Beckham accepts her celebrity status was instrumental in her success, as well as setting her up for potential ridicule.
“It’s a double-edged sword really,” she told the magazine.
“The most valuable part of being famous is that you have a voice and people will listen. I mean I can get a lot of attention. I don’t have to rely on advertising campaigns.”
Despite her success in both music and fashion, ‘the artist formerly known as Posh Spice’ insists that her work has always been more important to her than appearing in the papers.
“I like to keep my head down, work hard, focus on what I’m doing business-wise,” Victoria added.
“I like to try and control how much I’m seen. I don’t want to go out and be photographed every day, you know.”
