What was the first Pokémon?

The first Pokémon, also known as “Pocket Monsters,” is a media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. It was first released in Japan in 1996 as a pair of video games for the Game Boy handheld gaming system. Since then, the franchise has grown to include numerous sequels and spin-off games, a trading card game, several animated TV series and movies, comics, books, and merchandise.

The franchise revolves around fictional creatures called “Pokémon” which humans, known as Pokémon Trainers, catch and train to battle each other for sport. The objective of the games is to become the greatest Pokémon Trainer by traveling the world, capturing and training as many different species of Pokémon as possible, and competing in Pokémon battles.

The first Pokémon video game, Pokémon Red and Green, featured the original 151 species of Pokémon, which has since expanded to over 800 species. Each Pokémon species has its own unique abilities and traits, making them distinguishable from one another.

One of the franchise’s most popular characters is Ash Ketchum, a young Pokémon Trainer from the town of Pallet. Ash’s journey as a Pokémon Trainer began when he received his first Pokémon, Pikachu, as a gift on the day he became old enough to start his journey. Pikachu is a species of Pokémon known for its electric abilities, and it has become one of the franchise’s most iconic characters.

Another popular character is Team Rocket, a villainous organization that attempts to steal powerful Pokémon from Trainers for their own gain. The trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth serve as comic relief and provide a recurring obstacle for Ash and his friends.

The Pokémon animated TV series follows Ash as he travels the world with his friends, capturing new Pokémon and competing in Pokémon battles. Along the way, he meets other Trainers and encounters Team Rocket’s schemes, while also learning important lessons about friendship and sportsmanship.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet have sold 20.61 million combined units as of December 31, 2022.

In conclusion, the first Pokémon is a media franchise that has captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. From its humble beginnings as a pair of video games, it has grown into a global phenomenon with a massive following. With its lovable characters, exciting battles, and memorable adventures, the Pokémon franchise is sure to continue entertaining fans for many years to come.
