JoJo Siwa expressed that social media provided her with a supportive and secure environment when she openly shared her pansexuality in 2021. Utilizing platforms like Instagram and TikTok proved to be a pivotal experience for the 20-year-old dancer.
In an interview with E! News, Siwa shared her thoughts, saying, “Upon joining social media, I discovered a safe space to embrace my true self. Even if those around me didn’t offer their support, I found solace in knowing that there would be individuals online who would. I eagerly anticipated connecting with these people, and I firmly believed that coming out digitally would be more manageable than doing so in person. And I truly stand by that belief.”
Furthermore, Siwa referred to the management of online platforms as an artistic endeavor. She expressed her admiration for prominent figures such as Miley Cyrus, renowned for her hit song ‘Flowers,’ and the late music legend Freddie Mercury, who sadly passed away in 1991 due to AIDS-related complications. Siwa regarded them as her “superstar allies,” as they played significant roles in assisting her during her journey of self-discovery and coming out.
“I’ve never disclosed this before, but social media is an art form. It is disheartening when people undermine influencers and belittle their work, claiming that anyone could do it. However, that notion couldn’t be further from the truth. Social media truly embodies an artistry that requires a deep comprehension,” Siwa elaborated.
She enthusiastically delved into the intricacies of her involvement in this digital landscape, explaining, “It has been an exhilarating experience to discern the various ways I can contribute to this medium and discover my place within the larger picture.”
Siwa passionately recognized Miley Cyrus as an enduring icon who has left an indelible mark on her life. Additionally, she acknowledged the immense impact of the late Freddie Mercury, despite his physical absence. Siwa credited Mercury with assuaging her insecurities and transforming her mindset, reminding her to always be authentic and to embrace constant personal growth. Siwa concluded by emphasizing the importance of never confining oneself within boundaries or limitations.
