Meghan Markle’s ‘Three-Step Plan’ to Win Back Britain as Duchess Faces Her Toughest Royal Test Yet says Mark Boardman

EXCLUSIVE: Meghan Markle could face an uphill battle to rebuild her reputation in Britain, with the Duchess reportedly being urged to follow a three-step strategy involving Prince William and Princess Kate, a lower public profile and stronger ties to the UK.

Meghan Markle has reportedly been handed a three-step plan to help repair her relationship with Britain as speculation grows over a potential return to the UK with Prince Harry and their children.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reported to be considering spending significantly more time in Britain, with suggestions that a private, non-royal residence outside London could become their UK base.

Reports have linked the couple with areas close to Althorp, where Princess Diana is buried, as well as locations within reach of King Charles’s Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire.

But finding somewhere to live could prove considerably easier than rebuilding bridges with the Royal Family and a British public that has watched the Sussex saga unfold for years.

Royal showbiz journalist and MarkMeets founder Mark Boardman, who has covered and helped promote royal film premieres for more than 20 years, believes Meghan’s biggest challenge would be changing the conversation surrounding the couple.

“Meghan doesn’t need a grand relaunch in Britain. In fact, that could have the opposite effect. If she genuinely wants a fresh start here, less publicity, fewer revelations and allowing Harry to take the lead would probably do far more for her than another carefully managed PR campaign.”

Boardman has covered royal and showbusiness events for more than two decades and has met members of the Royal Family at numerous public and film events. He last met Prince William in 2023, Princess Anne in 2022 and Prince Harry and Meghan in 2019. His royal visits have also included Buckingham Palace, Sandringham and Osborne House.

Meghan Markle’s first step: William and Kate

The biggest obstacle could be the fractured relationship between Harry and his brother.

Harry and Prince William’s relationship has been under intense scrutiny since the Sussexes stepped away from frontline royal duties in 2020.

Relations deteriorated further following Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix documentary series and the publication of Harry’s memoir Spare.

During the Oprah interview, Meghan said there had been conversations within the Royal Family concerning how dark Archie’s skin might be. The allegation became one of the most controversial claims made by the Sussexes after leaving royal duties.

Harry subsequently revealed further details about disagreements within the family, including his troubled relationship with William.

A source claimed Meghan and Harry recognise that repairing relations with the Prince and Princess of Wales would be an important first step.

“Harry and Meghan know that there will never be a way back into the royal fold unless they can make things better with William and Kate, so that would be the first step.”

Meghan is reportedly hopeful that relations with Kate could eventually improve, although suggestions of reconciliation with William have been far less optimistic.

Boardman believes any genuine reconciliation is unlikely to happen through public statements or highly publicised gestures.

“William is the key relationship for Harry, but it’s also probably the hardest one to repair. If anything changes between them, I would expect it to happen privately and slowly. A photo opportunity isn’t going to undo several years of very public disagreements.”

Step two: Meghan ‘told to step back’ and let Harry lead

The second part of Meghan’s reported strategy could be particularly difficult for one of the world’s most recognisable women: staying out of the spotlight.

A source close to the couple claimed Meghan has been advised that Harry needs to become the more prominent figure during any renewed period in Britain.

The source said:

“Meghan knows this is not going to be easy, and she’s going to be eating humble pie. She’s been told this is her time to step back and let Harry do the talking, as after all, this is his home, and he is the star here.”

The approach would represent a significant change from many of the couple’s major projects since leaving royal duties, where Harry and Meghan have generally presented themselves as an equal partnership.

For Meghan, however, taking a quieter role could help avoid accusations that a UK return is simply another publicity exercise.

Boardman said:

“The British public can be remarkably forgiving, but they don’t like feeling that they’re being sold a rebrand. Meghan’s strongest move could actually be doing very little publicly at first. Let people see what happens rather than telling them what the new chapter is supposed to represent.”

Step three: Build genuine relationships in Britain

The third reported part of the strategy is less about palaces and more about people.

Meghan is said to have been encouraged to establish genuine friendships and a stronger support network in Britain rather than relying heavily on advisers and PR professionals.

A source claimed:

“She has also been urged to show humility and stay out of the spotlight while in the UK, and to try and make some real UK friends who can be a support to them during their time here.”

Such a move could help Meghan establish a life in Britain separate from the institution of the monarchy.

Harry, meanwhile, already has longstanding connections in the UK despite spending recent years living in California.

Boardman, whose career has brought together the worlds of entertainment, celebrity and royalty at film premieres and major events, believes the distinction could prove important.

“There is a huge difference between returning to Britain and returning to royal life. Harry can have a relationship with the UK without becoming a working royal again, and Meghan can build a life here without trying to recreate what existed before 2020.”

Could Britain really warm to Meghan Markle again?

That remains the multimillion-pound question.

Harry and Meghan have attracted passionate supporters as well as fierce critics since leaving Britain, and almost every appearance or announcement involving the couple generates debate.

Reports of a possible UK return have inevitably triggered another wave of scrutiny.

But Boardman argues that public opinion is rarely fixed forever.

“I’ve covered celebrities and royals for more than 20 years and reputations can change dramatically. What doesn’t work is demanding that the public changes its mind. It happens when people see something different over a sustained period of time.”

He added:

“For Meghan, humility would probably be more powerful than publicity. No dramatic comeback, no score-settling and no attempt to win everyone over overnight. If Britain is going to reassess her, it needs to happen naturally.”

Harry and Meghan face a very different Britain

Any extended return would mark a major change for the Sussex family.

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have spent most of their lives in the United States, while Meghan has made only occasional visits to Britain since the couple stepped back from royal duties.

For Harry, returning would mean coming home to a country where his relationships with several members of his family have fundamentally changed.

There would also be intense interest in whether King Charles could spend more time with Archie and Lilibet and whether Harry’s relationship with William could finally begin to thaw.

What appears increasingly clear is that a Sussex return would not simply be about finding a house.

It would be about relationships, reputation and whether years of royal fallout can ever truly be put behind them.

And if Meghan really has been given a three-step strategy — repair relations with William and Kate, step away from the spotlight and establish genuine roots in Britain — the first may prove considerably harder than the other two.

As Boardman puts it:

“You don’t repair a royal relationship through headlines. If Harry and Meghan want this to work, the most important conversations will be the ones the public never hears about.”

Can Meghan Markle really win Britain back?

Whether Meghan can change British public opinion remains to be seen. Years of royal rows, interviews and revelations cannot simply be erased by a change of address, while repairing Harry’s relationship with Prince William could prove even harder.

Royal showbiz journalist and MarkMeets founder Mark Boardman, who has covered royal and celebrity events for more than 20 years, believes actions rather than another publicity campaign will ultimately determine how any return is received.

“The biggest mistake would be trying too hard to convince Britain that Meghan has changed. People will make up their own minds. A quieter approach, some humility and keeping private family matters private would speak far louder than another big interview or carefully managed relaunch.”

For Harry, returning to Britain could offer an opportunity to rebuild some of the relationships lost during his years in California. For Meghan, however, the challenge is arguably greater.

Boardman added:

“I’ve met Harry and Meghan at events and covered the Royal Family alongside the entertainment industry for many years. The British public can forgive and move on, but trust takes much longer to rebuild. If Meghan wants a second chance here, she may have to accept that she can’t control the headlines — only what she does next.”

The Sussexes may therefore have a three-step plan, but there is one thing even the best PR team cannot manufacture: time.

And when it comes to Meghan Markle winning Britain back, that could prove to be the most important step of all.
