Adrian Johnston: A Texan Trailblazer in Country Music
Adrian Johnston is a name that resonates deeply with the country music scene in Texas. With a string of chart-topping singles under her belt and a unique blend of southern charm and unmatched vocals, she’s been a prominent figure in the Texan country music landscape. The accolades she’s earned in her musical journey are a testament to her dedication and passion for the craft. From her early days singing in front of the fireplace to the release of her latest single, “Household Name,” let’s delve into the remarkable journey of Adrian Johnston, a true Texan trailblazer in country music.
The Early Years and Musical Influences
Adrian Johnston’s musical journey began in Dallas, where she was surrounded by the melodies of artists like Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, and James Taylor. These legends provided the backdrop to her childhood and ignited her passion for music. She recalls, “singing in front of the fireplace like it was my own personal stage, and talking and putting on shows and dances and dressing up.” Her early fascination with music eventually led her to seek guidance from a vocal coach during high school.
A Journey into the Texas Country Music Scene
Johnston’s passion for singing led her to perform at local Opry events and open mic nights during her college years. Drawing inspiration from artists like Wynonna, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, and The Chicks, she began crafting her unique style. She decided to take the plunge and started performing at gigs, writing her own music, and collaborating with producers, setting her on a path into the Texas Country music scene.
“I wrote some songs, rounded up some A-list Dallas players and put on a show! It literally just snowballed from there and hasn’t stopped. I learned quickly that being an artist isn’t just ‘feeling the music’ but learning that you have to have a solid head on your shoulders to be a smart musician,” Johnston reminisces about her early days in the industry.
Milestones on the Way
Johnston’s growth as an artist is evident through her past records. She actively participated in the studio process, co-writing each song on her 2017 album “It Takes Time,” which followed her debut self-titled EP in 2014. Her journey involved relentless touring, sharing stages with Texan artists like Jack Ingram, Zane Williams, Turnpike Troubadours, and many more. Her live performances, featuring a mix of classics and original hits, have made her one of the most entertaining female artists in the Texas country music scene.
GRITS: Girls Raised in Texas
Adrian Johnston didn’t stop at conquering the stage as a solo artist. She came up with the innovative idea of “GRITS: Girls Raised in Texas,” an all-girl acoustic tour where they enjoy wine, share stories, and create unforgettable moments. This unique concept brings together talented Texan female artists, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and empowerment within the industry.
“I like to put on a high-energy show, but I’m just as fulfilled sitting with a guitar in a silent listening room,” says Johnston, emphasizing her commitment to connecting with her audience.
Life Beyond Music
After years on the road, Johnston’s journey took an unexpected turn when she met an East Texas gentleman. In November 2018, she officially became an “oil wife” after marrying Waine Close. Their love story was beautifully captured in her music video single, “Honky Tonk Wife,” released in January 2019.
Johnston has since called the piney woods of East Texas her home, embarking on ventures beyond her music career. She opened a women’s clothing boutique called SHEALITY and ventured into the AirB&B business with their renovated 1933 home, The She Shack.
Pandemic Pause and New Beginnings
The pandemic, which disrupted lives and careers across the globe, also affected Johnston’s road-life. She was forced to stay home, but this unexpected downtime allowed her to create and record new music, including her favorite Christmas song, “Where Are You Christmas.” This period of creativity also led to the birth of her first child, Johnston Waine Close, in October 2021.
The challenges of motherhood and maintaining a multifaceted career are central themes in her 2023 single, “Household Name.” The song resonates with mothers who balance demanding careers and full-time motherhood, echoing the sentiments of many women who sometimes wonder if they’ll ever fulfill their dreams while being thankful for their families.
The Future of Adrian Johnston
As for the future, Adrian Johnston takes her music one step at a time, guided by the moment’s inspiration rather than a rigid schedule. Her musical influences from artists like The Chicks, Faith Hill, Sara Evans, Shania Twain, and others continue to shape her style and vocal prowess.
In addition to her music career, she is also the CEO of SHEALITY Boutique, which has evolved from a side project to a thriving business. Johnston’s ability to balance her multiple roles is a testament to her determination and adaptability.
While the touring life tends to slow down during certain seasons, Johnston is already planning for special Spring 2024 tour dates that promise to excite her fans. Her journey as a Texan trailblazer in country music continues, leaving an indelible mark on the industry and in the hearts of her listeners.
