Charm of Finches Featured Artist March 2022 On MarkMeets Music

MEET : Charm of Finches – A rising duo, who are ones to watch!

Who are the duo?

Charm of Finches are Mabel and Ivy, and whilst they are already big in Australia, we are so excited that they are coming to the UK for the first time in the Spring.

The sisters live in Melbourne, Australia and create rhythmic tunes about love, grief and whispering trees with tight sibling harmonies and chamber folk sound; baroque folk with many stringed things.

Touring in support of their majestic third album: ‘Wonderful Oblivion’ (available in the UK from 6 May 2022 via Anti-Fragile Music), the band will be heading to the following destinations later this year:

Each month here at MarkMeets, we celebrate either a new unsigned music star or an existing artist on the rise and destined for stardom.

Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes grew up busking old time tunes and singing on festival stages around Australia.

Here is what Charm of Finches told MarkMeets.com in an exclusive interview:

What can you tell us about your new album ‘WONDERFUL OBLIVION’
We recorded our new album during the 2021 lockdown in Melbourne, Australia at home in Mabel’s tiny bedroom. We used one microphone in a makeshift vocal booth made out of microphone stands draped in blankets! We worked with producer Daniel Ledwell over in Canada long distance style – this involved a lot of zoom meetings and sending a lot of files back and forth. While our last album was a lot about processing feelings of grief after the death of one of our close friends, this album explores new beginnings, the wonder of death, childhood and dreams and the future of the world.

How excited are you about touring the UK?
Very excited! It’ll be our first international tour and our first time in the UK! We’ve always dreamed of visiting. When we were 8 and 11 we used to busk outside the veggie shop where our Dad worked with a little sign saying “Busking for Ireland”. We grew up listening to a lot of Celtic music and English folk songs so we can’t wait to come over and immerse in what feels like our musical roots!

Who would you most like to collaborate with and why?
Our all time musical hero is Sufjan Stevens – we think we’d mesh really well sonically, and lyrically we’d blend sad stories seamlessly.
Also we’d love to write songs with Laura Veirs from the US – her songs stir something deep within us. Her album Years of Meteors is probably our most listened to vinyl record.
It would be a dream to record with English producer John Parish who recorded some of our favourite artists like Aldous Harding, PJ Harvey and Jesca Hoop.

“Charm of Finches are an exciting Australian folk pairing that must be heard”

Citing influences such as Sufjan Stevens, Gillian Welch, Danish artist Agnes Obel and First Aid Kit, the sisters’ seamless blood harmonies traverse melancholy and wonder in equal measure.

The duo earned a nomination for the coveted 2021 Australian Music Prize. In recent times they have also been awarded the 2021 Music Victoria’s Best Folk Act and Youth Artist of the Year at the 2021 Australian Folk Music Awards.
