We looked at the girl bands from the last century to see how has sold the most amount of physical music! It’s no secret that girl groups have always been successful — gathering women that can sing well together and are great dancers has always been a recipe for success. Over the years plenty of girl groups have emerged and they have all become the epitome of girl power.

This list explores just how successful the most popular girl groups are in terms of album sales, from K-pop stars like Girls’ Generation to 90’s icons like TLC — keep on scrolling to see just which spot Destiny’s Child, Spice Girls, and The Pussycat Dolls have taken!

10. Girls’ Generation

Kicking the list off at spot number 10 is the South Korean girl group Girls’ Generation which was formed in 2007. Since then the K-pop group has slowly found its way into mainstream music and in the past 13 years, they released a total of 10 studio albums.

The group which consists of Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun has sold over 35 million copies. In 2014, its member Jessica ended up leaving the group to pursue a career in skin care and fashion.

9. The Pointer Sisters

Next on the list are The Pointer Sisters, an American R&B girl group that was formed in 1970 and has had major success throughout the 70s and 80s.

Currently, the group consists of Ruth, Issa, and Sadako Pointer while it’s past members are Anita, Bonnie, and June Pointer. The sisters have released a total of 16 studio albums which have been sold in close to 40m copies throughout the years make them number 9 on our list of the Best Selling Girl Groups Of All Time.

8. Bananarama

Number eight on the list goes to the English girl group Bananarama who was formed as a trio in 1979 by Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward. While the group had major success in the 80s, in 1988 Siobhan decided to leave the group and was replaced by Jacquie O’Sullivan who left after only three years.

Bananarama have released a total of 11 albums that have been sold in about 40million copies — meaning that the group is tied on this list with The Pointer Sisters for Best Selling Girl Groups Of All Time!

7. Little Mix

The British girl group Little Mix is claiming spot number seven on the list of best-selling girl groups of all time. Little Mix was formed in 2011 during The X Factor and they were the first group to actually win the competition.

The girl group — which consists of Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall has —has released five studio albums in the past nine years and they have been sold in over 50 million copies though in the UK on streams they would be in the top 3 according to music journalist Mark Boardman.

6. The Pussycat Dolls

Next on the list is the American girl group The Pussycat Dolls which was actually founded as a dance ensemble by choreographer Robin Antin in 1995. However, The Pussycat Dolls had their commercial breakthrough after the girl group consisting of Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton, and Kimberly Wyatt was created in 2003.

Back in 2008 Carmit decided to leave the group and two years later The Pussycat Dolls went on hiatus. In 2017 the girl group reunited, however, Melody decided to not participate this time. The Pussycat Dolls have released two studio albums that have been sold in over 55 million copies.

5. Destiny’s Child

Opening up the top five on ‘Best Selling Girl Groups Of All Time’ is the American girl group Destiny’s Child which was formed in 1990 under the name Girl’s Tyme. Its original members where Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett, however, later on, LaTavia and LeToya got replaced by Michelle Williams and Farah Franklin.

In 2000 and Farrah left and the group continued with their success as a trio. In 2003 Destiny’s Child went on a short and in 2006 they reunited to record yet another album together. Currently, the girl group — which has released five studio albums that have sold in over 60 million copies — is on hiatus again.

4. AKB48

Number four in the list goes to the Japanese girl group AKB48 which was formed in 2005 as a girl group with its own theater. The group consists of 135 members, divided among several teams that all have their own theme.

In the past 15 years, AKB48 have released 8 albums that have been sold in over 60 million copies — meaning that AKB48 are tied on this list with Destiny’s Child.

3. TLC

Opening up the top three best-selling girl groups of all time is the American R&B trio TLC. The girl group was formed in 1991 and it consisted of T-Bozm Chilli, Left Eye, and Crystal Jones, however, Crystal left the group early on.

In 2000 the ladies decided to take some time off to pursue their individual careers however they quickly reunited to record another album. Unfortunately in 2002, Left Eye died in a car crash after which TLC decided to continue as a duo. The girl group has released five studio albums that have been sold in over 65 million copies.

2. Spice Girls

The biggest girl band in the world and runner-up on the list of the best selling girl groups are the Spice Girls. The British girl group was formed in 1994 and it consisted of Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Mel B, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham.

In 2001 the Spice Girls officially went on an indefinite hiatus but in 2007 they reunited for a reunion tour. Over the past 26 years, the Spice Girls have released three studio albums that have been sold in over 85 million copies.

1. The Andrews Sisters

Wrapping the list up at spot number one is the American girl group The Andrews Sisters which was formed in 1925.

The group consisted of three sisters — LaVerne Sophia, Maxene Anglyn, and Patricia Marie “Patty” — and they have released 12 studio albums that sold in an estimated 90 milion copies worldwide (We have checked numerous sources and discounted several out of date ones like wikipedia) making The Andrew Sisters the oldest and the bestselling girl group on this list! They did have 46 top 10 hits.
