Star Wars: The Force Awakens Movie Review

Long after the Battle of Endor and the death of Darth Vader and Darth Scidious, the war continues with new foe: The First Order.

While searching for a map to Luke Skywalker, a stormtrooper by the name of Finn (John Boyega) decides to go against everything he is trained to do and help a rebel to escape the clutches of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Finn teams up with Rey (Daisy Ridley), a scavenger, to help a lost droid on its secret mission to get back to the rebel base.

This is by far one of the biggest films to be released all year and J.J. Abrams has definitely given the start of this trilogy a new breath of life. Everything that is good in this film is a result of Abrams’ choices, as a director he is showing his true colours although I don’t think the same could be said of Disney.

Every film has its flaw and Walt Disney is no exception. Their generic story plot left me feeling underwhelmed somewhat. This is not to say there aren’t some great lines and quotes that can be taken away but at no point was I not able to predict what might happen in the film. Of course the original trilogy did have the advantage of Lucas not finishing the plot until after the first film was released, so any twists involving incest appear to have been spontaneous.

The fundamental story aside, watching this film as a fan or even as a child for the first time the true excitement was from the glimpse from the past: old characters returning with their original cast, the sounds and visuals from technology not forgotten and the ruins of old AT-AT. One thing this film is very good at is bringing those aspects we know all too well and exploring them in a new light.

Take Finn for example, a stormtrooper. We know from previous films that these were originally clones but not only does the script explore where these new solders come from but also how and why they are as obedient and organised that we see in later time lines. John Boyega portrays this perfectly, especially in his angst: how a brainwashed sharp shooter might reacted when faced with the realisation of their situation. He is not the only new (British) actor that has shown promise, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver both appear to know what they are doing on set. All three of these actors have joined the Star Wars universe as if these roles were written particularly for them. Of course we cannot forget the nostalgic element of Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford who brought a tear to my eye just with the sight of them on set.

Looking into something old and something new, this film has it all. From the first chord of John Williams’ score it brings back memories of first seeing this franchise. Williams, along with the London Symphony Orchestra, provided one of the most perfect soundtracks to this whole experience. This was spiced up with a dash of Abrams ‘signature’ style of filming. Although it all feels very familiar, there is definitely something different about this film and I am putting this down to the camera angels. If you don’t know what I mean just compare the trailers of the original trilogy to Episode VII. Obviously technology has changed but the position of the camera makes everything feel fresh again.

This is a film not to be missed. It is as simple as that. No matter who you are young or old, coming back to an old favourite or wanting to try something new there is something here that everyone can appreciate. Not only is this visually an incredible film but a treat to the memories of the past, and for that I thank you J.J. Abrams. I might have poo pooed the story somewhat but it could have been a lot worse, at least it wasn’t the other hunk of garbage.
