Tom Cruise is reportedly going to be the first actor to film a movie in outer space

Tom Cruise is no stranger to flying high, but this time he’s (reportedly) going further than fighter jets can take him.

The 60-year-old Top Gun star has teamed up with director Doug Liman – of The Bourne Identity – to pitch a film that involves shooting in space, which initially was tabled in 2020 but, due to COVID-19, came to a halt.

Cruise and Liman reportedly reached out to Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) with an idea that would see the actor go to the International Space Station in a rocket.

“I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space,”.

“That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom … Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting.”

Langley did say that most of the film would be shot on Earth, but it would culminate with “the character [going] up to space to save the day.”

She added that she’s hoping Cruise will become “the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the space station.”

If the film goes ahead, Cruise would become the first actor to film a movie in outer space, on the International Space Station.

Cruise is known for being ambitious with and dedicated to his stunt work – after all, in July, Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie shared a photo to honour the actor’s 60th birthday, and in the shot, he was performing a terrifying stunt.

McQuarrie wished Cruise a happy birthday with a photo that shows him holding onto a red plane, or rather, dangling from the plane mid-air with very little assistance.

In 2017, Cruise made headlines after he was injured on the set of 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Leaked footage showed a leap from a rooftop going wrong, with Cruise seen slamming into the side of a building and hanging mid-air in a harness, before pulling himself up onto the building’s rooftop and stumbling towards the film’s crew.

Months later, he was back on the London set, filming even more stunts after he recovered from his broken ankle.

When Cruise was asked at the Cannes Film Festival why he chooses to act the stunts out himself rather than using a double, he reportedly responded: “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?'”
