The cast of Avatar: The Way of Water stepped out in full force for the film’s L.A. premiere!
Sam Worthingon, Zoe Saldana, and more walked the carpet at the Dolby Theater on Monday night (December 12) in Hollywood.
More cast members in attendance included Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, and Bailey Bass, as well as producer Jon Landau and Disney CEO Bob Iger, plus guests including Aaron Paul, Billy Zane, Heidi Klum and The Weeknd who will be releasing a new song this Friday as part of the Avatar: The Way of Water soundtrack and he stepped out for the film’s US movie premiere.
The film’s director James Cameron was unable to attend after he tested positive for COVID-19.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
Zoe Saldana Sets Record Straight About Comments Of Feeling ‘Stuck’ In Film Franchises
Zoe Saldana is clarifying her comments regarding feeling “stuck” in movie franchises like Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Trek.
While attending the premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water, the actor talked to Deadline on the blue carpet where she said she was grateful for the opportunities that the famous directors have given her.
“I would love to set the record straight,” she said. “I feel grateful and like the luckiest girl in this town knowing that I was invited to join films with special directors in a special cast. And they resonated with people so much so that we get a chance to come back again and come back another time. If anything, I’ve reaped all the benefits of that, I’ve gained friends. I still have mentors that I call and I lean into.”
Saldana continued, “But you know, I think that once I started my family, it just became really hard for me to sustain both worlds and also then cater to this curiosity of playing other different characters or playing earthlings you know, but I’m happy in space. I’ve always been happy in space. I relate to people that love space as well.”
Saldana has played Gamora across multiple films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and with plans for several more sequels of Avatar, she could potentially be portraying Neytiri for years to come. In a recent interview he made comments that she had not been able to experiment with other roles and felt “stuck doing these franchises.”
“I relate to men like James Gunn and James Cameron and JJ Abrams, and Steven Spielberg. Because maybe there is a common thread, maybe there’s something that we all have in common of knowing what it’s like to be misfits, and growing up feeling like you don’t belong and finding that space created that blank canvas, where you can imagine the unimaginable,” she added. “And the fact that they saw me, a little girl from Queens and I can do those things for them, I can only be so grateful if they call me back again and again and again.”
Avatar 5 Plot Brings Na’vi to Earth: Neytiri Eyes Will Open to Earth
The “Avatar” franchise is finally returning this month with its second installment, “The Way of Water,” but that’s not stopping producer Jon Landau from touting the fifth entry, which Disney currently has on its 2028 release calendar. Landau let it slip to Gizmodo that “Avatar 5” will bring the Na’vi alien race to earth.
“Well, it’s funny,” Landau said. “I wasn’t going to talk about it, but I’ve now subsequently heard that Jim has talked about it a little bit. In [‘Avatar 5’] there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.”
“Earth is not just represented by the RDA [the franchise’s evil organization known as the Resources Development Administration],” he said. “Just like you’re defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good. And that’s the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that.”
Landau’s comments would suggest that Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña via motion capture, is going to survive the events of at least three “Avatar” sequels. Whether or not her character gets to come to Earth in “Avatar 5” will depend entirely on the box office returns for “Avatar: The Way of Water.” James Cameron shot “The Way of Water” and “Avatar 3” together and confirmed to Total Film magazine that “Avatar 3” can be changed into a franchise conclusion should “The Way of Water” not perform at the box office.
“The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘OK, let’s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly,’ if it’s just not profitable,” Cameron said.
If the first batch of sequels are successful, then Cameron will see through with his plan to get “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” made. The filmmaker said that his “Avatar 4” script was the first “Avatar” sequel not to receive a single note from studio executives.
“I can’t tell you the details, but all I can say is that when I turned in the script for [‘The Way of Water’], the studio gave me three pages of notes,” Cameron said. “And when I turned in the script for 3, they gave me a page of notes, so I was getting better. When I turned in the script for 4, the studio executive, the creative executive over the films, wrote me an email that said, ‘Holy fuck.’ And I said, ‘Well, where are the notes?’ And she said, ‘Those are the notes.’ Because it kind of goes nuts in a good way, right?”
Early box office projections have predicted the sequel could earn between $150 million and $175 million in its opening weekend, when it hits theaters this Friday.
