James Blunt new BBC documentary in the works

James Blunt will be the subject of a new documentary

The You’re Beautiful singer first catapulted to fame back in 2004 with the release of his debut album Back to Bedlam, which later became one of the best-selling chart albums in history.

Billed as a story about “an ageing, British popstar, still fighting for relevance”, James Blunt to star in new documentary from team behind that iconic Bros show.

The film is a behind-the-scenes, all-access look at Blunt’s latest tour in Europe, while also promising to offer viewers greater insight into the soldier-turned-singer’s backstory.

Now, they’re turning their cameras to the icon that is James, and we can’t think of anyone better.

In the years to follow, he’s been in and out of the spotlight, but firmly solidified his position as a national treasure after showing his hilarious sense of humour off to fans online.

So, it’s hardly a surprise that the witty musician has been picked as the focus of a new one-off.

The documentary is the latest from production company Lorton Entertainment, who created some other pretty brilliant programmes.

They were behind BBC’s phenomenon Bros: After The Screaming Stops, award-winning Oasis documentary Supersonic and soon-to-air George Ezra film End-to-End.

Filmed on the road during his 2022 aptly named Greatest Hit Tour, director Chris Atkins has been given access all areas to the singer.

It follows the ex-soldier across Europe, honing in on his unique backstory, from witnessing the genocide of the Kosovo War, to recording the biggest selling album of the noughties.

The documentary is described as “Spinal Tap meets Alan Partridge” and “is a behind the scenes, brutally honest story of a painfully self-aware, endlessly touring musician, for whom persistence eventually prevails”.

Blunt himself quipped: “In hindsight, I’m not sure letting them film this was a good idea.”

The series is helmed by Lorton Entertainment, the makers of Bros: After the Screaming Stops, award-winning Oasis documentary Supersonic and soon-to-air George Ezra film End-to-End.

“This the story of an ageing, British popstar, still fighting for relevance some seventeen years after his star momentarily twinkled. No one has a more extraordinary story than James Blunt. The soldier turned singer has one of the most inspiring trajectories in the history of music,” the synopsis states.

Delving into James’ unique backstory, from witnessing the genocide of the Kosovo War, recording the biggest selling album of the 2000s [with 2004’s Back to Bedlam], enduring the harsh backlash that followed his meteoric success, and then tweeting his way back to becoming a national treasure, this is an intimate portrait of James Blunt, as never seen before.”
