Extinction of the Transformers saga has already begun

Set five years after the destruction of Chicago in Dark of The Moon (yes a bit of a recap on what happened last time, which never happened in the previous three) Transformers: Age of Extinction sets out to continue the franchise, taking a new path in more than one way.

Lots of explosions, action scenes and robots wrecking cities up (this time half way around the world) and we’ve got ourselves the fourth in the now to be Hexology?

To begin with, there were a lot of weak points, the biggest challenge being the fact that the entire human cast was replaced. I felt that Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci did a good job, bringing good on screen humor which we had in the past with Shia LaBouef and John Tuterro, but the rest of the cast were bland. A lot of it has to do with writing: the characters were shallow and didn’t have any depth at all. At a running time of 15 minutes shy of 3h hours you think it would be enough to have more characters saying more words instead of two-syllable word “Dad!”

Yes from Nicola Peltz who plays Walhbergs’ daughter, where I feel they spent more time on the human characters stories rather than what the title of the movie is all about. Sophia Myles didn’t have enough screen time for the movie and in the beginning tricks the audience into believing something about the Transformers which in the end disappoints the Tranformers fan. The fact that Bay chose to concentrate on the humans again, and failed with it again, speaks volume.

It was, however, good to see how Cade (Wahlberg) first comes across Optimus Prime and being a mechanic/inventor, revitalizes the beaten leader, but has a different agenda at the time. The focus also shifted from Bumblebee to Prime as the main link to the protagonist, but oddly it was never explained why Bee left Sam in the first place, being his most loyal protector. It also tries to explain what happens to the other part of the autotbot gang, though there are some scenes, which will shock, yet confuse you.

Now, speaking of techs in the film, there was a lot of slow-mo. A lot. And it really took you away from the action. It is okay to employ slow-mo sometimes, for example when the robots are transforming, but not at every single shot. And also a lot of explosions too. We’re talking Revenge of The Fallen plus Dark of the Moon put them together.

The transforming of the robots also lacked within the film. Bay seems to do it in a up-down graph way. First movie was unbelieveable, second one everyone had seen it, and the third was just in awe with Shockwave. This one lacked it and tried things differently to the movie, which worked well but became dull after a while.

Also the fights weren’t as good compared with the gigantic robot battles or human black ops tactics in previous films.

However one for all the die hard Dinobots fans out there, Bay hasn’t ruined them or changed them in anyway. He’s kept them badass but also that slight dumbness. Grimlock was by far the best. Even though we see them for 20 or so minutes, they were just magnificent.

And Lockdown, a bounty hunter as the main villain was also done nicely, though it does lack the old Decepticon vs. Autobots. You would expect Galvatron to be more of a character in it but doesn’t get a lot of screen time yet again.

WATCH the Trailer:

In conclusion, not as good as the first or the third, but still better than the second (not that this should count for anything as that was
plain awful). Though left you confused at times and also asking more questions at the end of it. Altogether, too long, too stretchy, way too much slow-mo, some decent fights and action, introduction of the Dinobots was just brilliant. Lets hope Bay will concentrate more on the fifth movie and focus more on the fan reviews.
