Ghostbusters 4 (Afterlife sequel) Delayed to 2024

Sony Delays Highly-Anticipated Ghostbusters Sequel

Sony Pictures has made the decision to delay the release of the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, shifting its premiere from Christmas 2023 to Easter 2024. This postponement comes as a result of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike that has impacted the entertainment industry.

The filming of the movie commenced on March 20, 2023, with Sony sharing an exciting snapshot of the director, Jason Reitman, on set to mark the occasion. Ernie Hudson, a returning cast member from the original Ghostbusters franchise, confirmed that the sequel was shot in the UK. By July 2023, production had successfully wrapped up. Gil Kenan, who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife, will be at the helm of the movie as the director, while Reitman will serve as the producer. Sadly, this film marks the first Ghostbusters installment without the involvement of Ivan Reitman, who passed away in February 2022.

Release Date Shuffle and Ongoing Strikes

The release date of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has been altered from December 20, 2023, to March 29, 2024, replacing the previous slot held by Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. As a consequence, the release of Beyond the Spider-Verse has been postponed indefinitely. The delay is part of Sony’s broader strategy to navigate through the challenges posed by the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.

In addition to the Ghostbusters sequel, several other Sony films have faced adjustments in their release dates. Kraven the Hunter has been pushed from October 6, 2023, to August 30, 2024. Gran Turismo saw a more modest change, moving from August 11, 2023, to August 25, 2023. The release date for the next Karate Kid movie shifted from June 7, 2024, to December 13, 2024. Interestingly, Madame Web experienced a slight advancement, moving from February 16, 2024, to February 14, 2024. Furthermore, Sony has announced the release dates for Bad Boys 4 and Venom 3, which are scheduled for June 14, 2024, and July 12, 2024, respectively.

Delayed but Expected

Interestingly, Ernie Hudson, a veteran of the Ghostbusters franchise, previously hinted at the possibility of the Afterlife sequel’s delay. During an interview, Hudson mentioned that while filming had concluded, there were speculations that the release might be pushed to the end of the year or possibly to the spring of the following year. He also acknowledged the challenges faced during filming, particularly due to the writers’ strike, which required some reshuffling in production. Nonetheless, the film was completed, and the anticipation among fans is growing as they eagerly await the final product.

What to Expect from Ghostbusters 4

According to the official Twitter account of Ghostbusters, the upcoming sequel will be the “next chapter in the Spengler family story.” This suggests that the plot will center around Phoebe, Trevor, and the new generation of Ghostbusters.

The post-credit scene in Ghostbusters: Afterlife already hinted at a sequel, and director Jason Reitman expressed his desire for the Ghostbusters mythology to continue expanding from Afterlife. He aimed to create a film that not only serves as a worthy successor to the original franchise but also lays the foundation for more Ghostbusters stories to come.

The untitled Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel is set to hit theaters on March 29, 2024. Ghostbusters enthusiasts and moviegoers alike can look forward to an exciting continuation of the beloved supernatural franchise.
