Steven Spielberg is proud some of the world’s best actors have declined to work with him.
The celebrated director is behind some of cinema’s most loved films including E.T, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, has worked with everyone from Liam Neeson to Leonardo DiCaprio on the big screen.
Despite having an awards cabinet boasting three Oscars, four Golden Globes and hundreds of other accolades, not all actors jump at the chance to work with him.
He said “I’m proud that I’ve been turned down by some of the greatest actors in history. Daniel Day-Lewis turned me down three times,” Steven smiled to Britain’s Radio Times magazine.
Oscar-winner Mark Rylance also once decided against working with the director, on 1987’s Empire of the Sun, though changed him mind for 2015 film Bridge of Spies. The part of Rudolf Abel landed him his first Academy Award and led to Mark’s star turn in Steven’s upcoming adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG.
“It was like meeting an old friend,” shared Mark of his experience working with the legendary filmmaker.
“Yes, that’s how I felt, too. I felt like we had been working together all my life. It felt like I’d known him all my life,” Steven smiled. “We became pals, which I don’t often do. You know, we’re all gypsies and we move into other worlds, but I didn’t want Mark to leave my world at all.”

Other stars to have turned the director down include actor Steve McQueen and Gene Hackman.
Much like Mark, Daniel also went on to successfully team up with Steven on Lincoln in 2012, again winning an Oscar for his role in the director’s film. The movie, about assassinated U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, also scored the Academy Award for production design.
