Exclusive inteview with US music producer Aibai

Aibai serves up light synth bliss on her fun EP ‘Disconnected’

The atmospheric new EP from Aibai, delivers an immersive experience for listeners and here at MarkMeets Music, we managed to recenty interview the rising star. Her melodies are packed with surrounding, true to life soundscapes that make a fantasy like environment.

Aibai is a 24-year-old producer originally from Minneapolis and currently located in Phoenix.

Aibai tracks are full of atmospheric, cinematic soundscapes that transport you to another world. Her latest music, after experimenting with many genres, focuses on a cheerful electronic dance style, drawing inspiration from artists such as Odesza and Polo & Pan, and combining organic instruments with electronic components to produce a unique mixture of sounds.

‘Ambient, Cinematic, Dream-like EP’.

Disconnected, her new four-track EP, tells the story of the artist’s feelings at the time she wrote it.
Noticing a detachment from reality, she channelled her feelings into her music, resulting in a release that allows listeners to disengage from reality by providing an immersive experience and transporting them into an ambient dream-like condition.

How did you feel when spotify revealed that your music had been streamed in 134 different countries?
It’s pretty amazing to see how much exposure Spotify can give an artist. To know that people all around the world have heard my music is just astonishing.

Jordin Sparks, Stevie Nicks and more stars from Phoenix have achieved great success, what is it that inspires you from your neighbourhood? So I started making music in Minneapolis, and was living there for 5 years which was where I was most inspired. I moved to Phoenix 9 months ago back in the fall and I think the most inspiring thing here for me is the nature. I go on lots of weekend trips around the state and to surrounding states. Those trips have let me gain experiences and see things that inspire my music every day!

What was the first song you learnt to play on piano? I’m sure the very first song I learned was something like hot cross buns when I was 4 taking piano lessons. But I think the first song that I learned that really stuck was Moonlight Sonata. I learned how to play that when I was probably 8 and played it all the time.

How did your new EP ‘Disconnected’ come about? I had quit my job because I wasn’t liking the management/owners. I decided to take some time off so I could focus on music rather than jumping right back into the service industry. This allowed me to work on music everyday which was awesome. I knew I had wanted to make an EP so I set a goal to write a 4 song EP within one month. I wrote a song each week, all inspired by artists such as Odesza, Polo and Pan, Rufus Du Sol and many more.

What is next? I am playing my first festival this summer which I am stoked about! I hope to book more shows and write more music this summer as well. I am planning on moving out of Phoenix soon too due to the lack of music opportunities down here.

Leading single “Higher” sees the artist playing with samples she recorded of her roommates and pets. She shares, “It was super fun including everyone on this song! And I had a fun time taking their voices, meows, and barks and turning them into a cool new sound that could add to the song.”

All-encompassing echoing synths, playful melodies and dance-worthy beats create an intoxicating aura, letting your mind float away and forget about your worries. Ethereal, hypnotic and transcending, Aibai has constructed her own world with Disconnected, and it’s one where you’ll never want to leave.

Aibai has garnered acclaim from the likes of Live Nation, MarkMeets Music and Rolling Stone and Aibai will be touring the West Coast this summer.
