Lady Gaga’s ‘ARTPOP’ to sell fewer copies than ‘Born This Way’

Lady Gaga’s latest album is expected to sell about 75% less units in the US than ‘Born This Way’ and judging by the music we’ve heard so far this seems about right.

The ‘Marry The Night’ superstar singer unleashed ‘ARTPOP’ on Monday and it instantly hit No.1 on iTunes charts across the globe, as well as charting at the top spot on the official UK midweek update.

Whilst it is also expected to land at No.1 in the US, Billboard reports that its estimated first week sales figures will be around 260,000.

However, this is a stark decrease in sales from 2011’s ‘Born This Way’, which managed to sell 1.1m copies in its first seven days on sale.

It is said that around 440,000 of those sales were via an Amazon promotion which saw the record priced at 99 cents. Music Editor Mark Boardman said “People have embraced Gaga for who she is and the music she maked”. He added “However fans want hits like Poker Face and You and I”.

If Gaga’s ‘ARTPOP’ estimate is true, then it means that she will have sold less in America than her chart rival Katy Perry’s 2013 effort ‘Prism’.

That album, which features the hit track ‘Roar’, managed to shift 286,000 in its first week.

Lady Gaga on sexuality: ‘My earlier experiences with sex were quite perverted’

“I would say that in pop music, in that particular sphere, there’s a one-dimensional quality to sexuality. There’s an intention always behind the sexuality, if the sexuality is there. Most of the time, I don’t consider myself to be very sexy actually. In the beginning of my career, some of this exploration of covering myself up and transforming into other icons and other life forces was a sense of sexual freedom for this as I felt quite numbed by my experiences.”

When asked about her own portrayal of sexuality on her new album, ‘ARTPOP’, the songstress admitted that she didn’t write about it with any specific intention past the act itself, but she now has a great sex life and feels far more confident, which she thinks is reflected in her music:

“I don’t create with the intention of the finale… I don’t always know what’s going to come out it. My earlier experiences with sex were quite perverted and scary; terrifying. Fear. Now I have really great sex, but it’s just sort of a natural change.”
