Pharrell Williams has made UK chart history as his million-selling single ‘Happy’ has returned to No. 1 for a third time.
This hat-trick feat makes Pharrell the third artist in UK chart history to have a song reach the top spot on three separate occasions.
The other two acts to achieve the same milestone are Frankie Laine with ‘I Believe’ in 1953 and Guy Mitchell with ‘Singing The Blues’ in 1957.
Earlier this week ‘Happy’ passed the one million sales mark which gave Pharrell Williams three million-selling tracks within a year. The smash hits ‘Get Lucky’ and ‘Blurred Lines’ were the other two Pharrell numbers that have put him in the chart history books. The only other act to achieve this is The Beatles.
The sales of ‘Happy’ also make Pharrell one of only three acts to have three million-selling singles in the UK. The Beatles and Rihanna have also enjoyed this accolade.
Last week’s number one, ‘Money On My Mind’ by Sam Smith, has now fallen to No. 2. Clean Bandit’s ‘Rather Be’ is a non-mover at No. 3. Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ has risen two places to No. 4. Completing the top five is A Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera with ‘Say Something’ descending one place to No. 5.
New entries to this week’s chart come from Tiësto with ‘Red Lights’ at No. 6, Foxes’ ‘Let Go For Tonight’ at No. 7 and Paloma Faith at No. 10 with ‘Can’t Rely On You’.
A notable climber this week is ‘We Built This City’ by Starship. ‘We Built This City’ originally charted in 1985 but has raced 158 places upwards to reach No. 26 after being featured in a recent Three Mobile television advert.
