Declutter and save: Turning family unwanted items into cash

The art of decluttering has evolved into more than just a method to tidy up one’s living space. It has helped people across the UK generate a little extra cash, fostering a financially savvy approach to dealing with unwanted items.

With the rise of the digital marketplace and a growing awareness of sustainability, families are increasingly looking to turn their clutter into cash. Not only does this contribute to a cleaner, more organised home environment but it also provides a new home for unwanted items, meaning they can become someone else’s treasured item.

What and how to declutter

The decluttering process involves identifying and separating items that are no longer needed or wanted. Key areas to focus on include clothing that no longer fits, outdated electronics, books that won’t be re-read, and kitchen gadgets that haven’t been touched in years.

Techniques such as the ‘12-12-12 Challenge’, which involves finding 12 items to throw away, 12 to donate, and 12 to be relocated within the house, make decluttering a manageable and even enjoyable task.

Another fun technique to try is the ‘Move Out’ method. The idea is simple – if you were moving into your dream home, would you take that item with you? If the answer is no, get rid.

This is an excellent visualisation technique that can help you differentiate between glorified clutter and the practical items we use on an everyday basis that we couldn’t live without.

Places to sell your stuff

Once you’ve sorted through your belongings, various platforms can help you turn them into cash. Online marketplaces like eBay, Gumtree, and Facebook Marketplace are excellent for reaching a wide audience.

If you’re decluttering old clothes, Depop and Vinted are handy apps to easily find a new home for your forgotten wardrobe.

For specialised items like designer clothing or electronics, consider niche platforms that cater to specific buyer groups. Additionally, local car boot sales and charity shops offer a straightforward way to sell or donate items, ensuring they find a new life with someone who needs them.

Decluttering as a side hustle

Perhaps you’ve considered decluttering as a side hustle as a way of earning passive income. If so, you should start by dedicating time each week to sort through different areas of your home.

Use social media and online marketplaces to sell your items, taking care to present them attractively with clear photos and descriptions. For more valuable items, research their worth to ensure you price them competitively. Over time, you may find decluttering not only frees up space in your home but also provides a steady stream of extra income.
