Does baby formula contain gluten?

PARENTING

Gluten is a plant protein found in cereal grains. Wheat, barley and rye have the most gluten, while oats and corn have a little less.

Gluten is perfectly safe for most people and is well absorbed by the body. If you buy it alone and just eat it, it does no harm. It is just as safe to eat meat or eggs, which also contain protein. But there is a certain percentage of people on the planet for whom eating gluten is really very dangerous. This is due to an autoimmune disease called gluten enteropathy or celiac disease. When people diagnosed with celiac disease eat gluten, their immune system creates antibodies that, among other things, damage the intestinal walls. This disrupts the body’s absorption of nutrients. As a consequence, the immune system does not receive vital elements – iron, folic acid, etc. Such people need to completely abandon the products that contain gluten. Primary manifestations of gluten intolerance can be determined by the following reactions:

– Abundant and frequent stools that have a pungent odor. The stool in this case will be frothy, and its color will be light or grayish.

– Bloating of the abdomen.

– Decreased appetite.

– Pallor of the skin.

– Loss of body weight or stoppage in gaining weight.

– Nervousness, sleep deprivation, hyperexcitability or apathy.

Basically, the disease of gluten intolerance and, accordingly, the products in which it is contained, is due to a genetic predisposition. That is, if the mother has celiac disease, the baby is more likely to have it. This disease affects the intestines and can develop in both children and adults. With this pathology, a strict diet is indicated, involving the complete elimination of wheat, rye, and barley from the diet. This diet is called gluten-free and is popular with positive parenting enthusiasts.

Gluten isn’t bad for everybody

Gluten is useful because this compound contains important amino acids for vital functions. For example, lysine in its composition is responsible for tissue growth and regeneration. This amino acid is significant for the immune system. Threonine supports the digestive system and body growth. Thanks to the amino acid methionine, is the synthesis of hemoglobin. In addition, gluten has phosphorus, calcium and vitamins (group B, A and E). After all, if you do not have any hereditary diseases, then feel free to include cereal products in your diet. That’s why it’s essential to consider organic baby formulas for your baby.

Impact of gluten on baby’s body

As for infants and toddlers under one year of age, they may have an allergic reaction when gluten-containing cereal products are introduced into their diet. Therefore, gluten-containing products are not desirable in the diet of children until they reach at least 6-8 months of age. Of course, be sure to consult your pediatrician when choosing baby food.

Try to choose a dairy formula without gluten, sugar, or starches, which can provoke allergic reactions in a child. For example, the company HiPP, manufactures its formulas using the latest technology based on organic milk. And in the initial stages of formulas, it is obligatory to exclude gluten and artificial preservatives. This avoids possible digestive problems and allergies. Gluten-free HiPP formulas can easily be found on store shelves by the sign of the crossed out spike.

The main aspect in choosing a formula is to maintain a balance of vitamins, macro and micronutrients. A nutritious diet should promote immunity and not harm your health.
