Explained: Outside bets in Roulette

When it comes to the online gaming world, there are plenty of games to choose from, including Poker, Roulette, Blackjack, Slots and many other game classics.

With this in mind, we wanted to take a look at one gaming sensation that’s a hit with players both on and offline – Roulette.

As the popularity of Roulette grows, more players new to the casino online gaming world are taking a virtual seat at the iconic table, without knowing too much about the game.

Therefore, we wanted to explore one category of bets players can place when playing Roulette both in person or whilst logged in to their preferred gaming website, known as outside bets.

So, if you’d like to know more about outside bets and how you could be placing your next outside bet within a game of Roulette, scroll down to find out more.

What is an outside bet?

When it comes to placing a bet in any game of Roulette, where you place it will determine what type of bet you’re placing.

If you were to look at the Roulette table layout, you’ll notice it’s split into sections. A boxed grid filled with individual numbers between 0 and 36, as well as boxes around this grid containing both numbers, letters and colours.

The numbered grid is known as the inside area, whereas the boxes around the grid are the outside area. It’s in the outside area where outside bets are placed.

Outside bets

Now you know where on the table layout an outside bet can be placed, let’s take a look at a handful of outside bets you could place when you next step up to the iconic wheel and table.

Red or Black

A bet that concentrates on the colour of the pocketed compartment of the wheel rather than the number within, is also known as a red or black bet.

A red or black bet will cover all red or black compartments of the wheel within the game, so you have an almost 50:50 chance of predicting correctly. Because of this odd, a red or black bet is also known as an even money bet.

To place a red or black bet, you’ll simply need to place a betting chip(s) within the red or black box. The red and black boxes are either found to be filled with a block colour of the colour they represent, or with the word ‘red’ or ‘black’.

The betting odds for a red or black bet is 1:1.

High or Low

This bet type concentrates on half the numbers spinning around the wheel which either fall within the high or low category. The numbers found within the low category are numbers 1 to 18, with high numbers consisting of 19 to 36.

As the zero(s) of the wheel are not included, the odds of correctly predicting the outcome of the game with this type of bet is just below 50:50, meaning this bet too is classed as an even money bet.

To place a high or low bet, you simply need to place a betting chip(s) within the box marked with either ‘high’ or ‘low’ or ‘1 to 18’ or ’19 to 36’.

The betting odds for a high or low bet is 1:1.
