The Premier League campaign is in full swing, and several surprises have already occurred. Indeed, there have been other aspects that have remained the same.
Manchester City’s decline
Many would have expected Manchester City to be running away with the league at this point of the season, but they are slipping and sliding all over the place. Pep Guardiola’s side can’t buy a win at the moment, having been handed a surprise defeat to their Manchester rivals United in the derby when leading 1-0 into the final moments of the game.
The four-time back-to-back winners (and six times in seven years) are fifth after suffering five defeats in the league. They managed to defeat Nottingham Forest recently, but before then, they had gone on an eight-game run without one after beating Southampton at the end of October. The whole of November saw them winless.
Chelsea’s rise
Amid the decline of Man City, an impressive resurrection was experienced at Stamford Bridge. The mess that the new ownership brought to the club following their takeover and “Football Manager” approach in regard to transfers appears to have sorted itself out under the guidance of Enzo Maresca.
The Blues are now competing effectively at the top of the table, as they are the closest challengers to Liverpool currently. Nonetheless, the club continues to state that they are not in a title race – perhaps as a means to damper expectations. Either way, the club is playing quality football that is producing results, making them one to watch.
Liverpool for the title?
Speaking of the title, the Premier League odds suggest that it’s Liverpool’s to lose at the moment. Unibet has them a clear favorite at 1.80, way out in front of the likes of Chelsea (4.50) and Arsenal (4.75). Arne Slot has taken over from Jurgen Klopp and made everything look simple. Despite contract issues with key players, nothing appears to have fazed anyone at Anfield as they’re trying to win their first title since their 2019-20 triumph.
Mohamed Salah remains a vital cog amid his contract situation, as do Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Reds seem unstoppable at the moment, having only been beaten once this season, which came early in the campaign and as a surprise against Nottingham Forest. Since then, while there have been a few mishaps, there hasn’t been any that have been significant enough to rule them out as the next potential champions.
Is Arsenal’s race drying up?
Arsenal are a club that have been in the mix for the title in the last few years. They’ve arguably thrown away the title on a couple of occasions in the last few seasons, having been pipped by City in each of the last two seasons. With City slipping up, they may have thought this year could be theirs…
However, they’ve slipped up themselves. While Mikel Arteta’s side appear to have found a corner routine that produces goals, they’ve found it hard to score in open play over the last few weeks. Some of their stars have also been ineffective, while some have missed large portions of the campaign due to injury. They still remain well within the hunt at the moment, but with Liverpool and Chelsea striding ahead with each game played, it’s hard to see the Gunners keep up their own charge at times.
Who is the most likely to win the 2024/25 Premier League title?
The festive period can offer an insight into what to potentially expect for the remainder of the season. Games are fast and come at a frenetic pace, with matches often being played with just a few days grace between them.
Liverpool are in pole position at the moment to take the spoils, and it’s hard seeing them let their grip go, given how well their stars are performing.
Chelsea are right there with them at the moment, but with inexperience and youth in their ranks, perhaps that’s why there are many that are saying they aren’t in the race just yet.
For City and Arsenal, the damage might already have been done regarding their prospects while Forest’s impressive start isn’t something many believe will continue to foster over the coming months.
