What To Know When Considering Medical Marijuana Treatment

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll likely have heard quite a lot about medical marijuana in the past few years. While it’s been around for decades — California legalized it back in 1996 — it’s really over the past decade or so that things have really taken off. Today, forty of the fifty states in the United States have legalized medical marijuana, and that’s not by accident. There’s an increasing body of research that shows that medical marijuana offers significant mental, physical, and emotional benefits to patients.

If you’re curious about medical marijuana, then this page is for you. We’ll outline some of the key things to know before and during your treatment.

It Can Offer a Wide Range of Benefits

Part of the reason why medical marijuana has grown in popularity is that it can be used to treat a wide range of conditions. It can be used in the treatment of both physical and psychological conditions, including Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, sleep disorders, and much more.

If you have a condition that you believe may benefit from medical marijuana, then schedule a consultation with a healthcare professional.

There Are Different Types

People tend to talk about medical marijuana as if it’s a single medication solution, but it’s not really. There are different types of medical marijuana available, and they can serve different purposes. Most healthcare professionals divide medical marijuana into CBD and THC treatments, though those usually refer to which is dominant in the product. Most medical marijuana contains at least some CBD and THC.

CBD and THC can produce similar results but do so in different ways. The main difference is that THC produces a “high” effect, while CBD does not. CBD is prescribed for conditions that include depression, anxiety, and insomnia; THC is prescribed to treat nausea, appetite changes, and pain.

You’ll Be Supervised, But Knowledge Is Still Key

Patients are supervised by medical marijuana professionals when undertaking treatment, but it’s still important to ensure you have some key knowledge before and during treatment.

Understanding the potential side effects, for instance, can make them easier to manage. Similarly, understanding dosage, such as by reading a comprehensive quarter pound guide, can help give you a solid grasp of how much you’re being prescribed. It’s also recommended to more broadly read up on medical marijuana in general, since it’s an ongoing field of research and there are always new — nearly always positive — findings being released.

There Are Various Consumption Methods

Most people think that consuming medical marijuana happens through inhalation (as in, smoking), but that’s not always the case. In some cases, medical marijuana healthcare professionals recommend other administration techniques. For example, this could be oral (tablets), sublingual (drops placed under the tongue), topical (in the case of creams), or other inhalation methods (such as vaporization).

The amount of time it takes to feel the effects — and how long they last — depends on the consumption method. Your doctor will make a recommendation as to which one will work best for you.
