Happy Valley cast filmed several endings for series 3 gripping final

The popular drama, starring Sarah Lancashire, has been back on TV after six years away – and viewers are desperate to know whether there will be a series four

The cast of Happy Valley has no idea how the hit BBC drama will conclude after filming multiple endings.

The third and final series of Sally Wainwright’s gripping series is well underway and with two episodes to go, fans are already sharing theories of how the finale will play out.

Amit Shah, who plays the drug-dealing pharmacist Faisal, has revealed that he hasn’t a clue how the storyline for his character wraps up, given that he shot a variety of different scenes.

‘I still don’t know how it all ends up for him because we filmed the final scenes in various different ways,’ he told the Obsessed with… Happy Valley podcast.

Recent Happy Valley scenes saw Faisal kill Joanna Hepworth (Mollie Winnard) in cold blood after she attempted to blackmail him and they schemed to kill her abusive husband, Rob (Mark Stanley).

BBC Happy Valley: How many episodes, when does it end and will there be a series 4?

The first episode was broadcast on New Year’s Day, six years after the gripping drama last graced our TV screens. It follows Sergeant Catherine Cawood, who is played by Oldham’s very own Sarah Lancashire.

The latest series has had viewers hooked, while Mancunians noticed a popular Bolton café make an appearance in a recent episode. During Happy Valley’s third instalment, police sergeant Catherine confronted her sister Clare over the devastating discovery that she had been helping her grandson Ryan visit his father behind bars.

Catherine trailed her sister and her boyfriend Neil as they were heading to Sheffield Prison. But when Clare headed to sit in a local cafe, Catherine seized the moment to confront her about the duplicity.

How many episodes are in Happy Valley season 3?

In total, there will be six episodes of Happy Valley in its third and final series. Each episode is an hour long. They have been airing on Sunday nights at 9pm on BBC One.

Seasons one and two were also made up of six episodes each.

When does Happy Valley finish?

The BBC drama’s concluding episode will air on Sunday, February 5.

There will be no further seasons of the drama, with series creator Sally Wainwright and Sarah Lancashire agreeing it would only return one more time.

Executive producer Will Johnston confirmed: “It definitely isn’t coming back – and again this is [from] Sally and Sarah who completely and rightly feel that you can have too much of a good thing.

“The two vital things are that Rhys [Connah, playing Ryan Cawood] is now at an age to make his own decisions about his life and the relationships in it, and [Lancashire’s character] Catherine’s on the brink of retirement, and those felt like such juicy things to explore.”

During Sunday night’s episode, Faisal was confronted by Rob after he went into the back of Faisal’s car during the school run.

Faisal remained scarily calm under the circumstances, which occurred just hours after he had murdered Joanna.

‘I think he’s going through that weird transition period,’ Amit continued on the podcast.

‘When the collision happens and he realises it’s Rob like a switch goes in his head. He thinks, “Okay, I can either be Faisal from before or I can take control of the situation.” It’s just a different him.’

Elsewhere during the chilling episode, Rob discovered his wife Joanna’s body stuffed in a suitcase in their garage, and Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) made his great escape during a court appearance.

Happy Valley airs Sunday nights at 9pm on BBC One.
