A documentary follows the tragic chain of events leading up to Lord Lucan’s
Everyday on our twitter we reveal our TV picks and Highlights on @MarkMeets Here is today’s run-down.
Film of the day: Dear John, E4, 8pm
If you ever sobbed your way through The Notebook, you’ll know what to expect from a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. This soppy war romance stars a before-he-was-funny Channing Tatum as John, a handsome young soldier who falls in love with a pretty student (Amanda Seyfried). They have a smitten summer on the beach but then are parted by war. She promises to wait for him and they build their relationship through letters to each other. This being a Sparks story, you know disease and death are inevitable, the only vague suspense being placing bets on who will cop it and when. Critics loathed Dear John but it proved a hit with audiences. And if Christmas has put you in a forgiving, slushy kind of mood, you may well enjoy a wallow in it.
Patisserie With Michel Roux Jr, BBC4, 9pm
Some of the sweet delights in the repertory of the French pastry chef are familiar from The Great British Bake Off – the opéra cake, macarons, financiers – but here we see what professionals can do with ‘butter, carbs and sugar’ as Michel Roux Jr takes us on a documentary spin through the traditions and cutting-edge creations in the world of the pâtissier. And there’s a touch of danger on the menu as Michel’s conical croque-en-bouche threatens to implode before serving.
24 Hours In A&E, C4, 9pm
In an episode that offers a painfully stark close-up on a mother’s anguish, the life of a 12-year-old boy hangs in the balance after being hit by a car on his way home from school. With mum Justine rushing to be by her son’s side, the emergency staff race against time to identify and assess his injuries. There’s time for poignant reflection, too, as 64-year-old Linda writes notes to the medical team after her vocal cords were removed in an operation to treat cancer.

Lucan, ITV, 9pm
It’s 39 years since minor aristocrat Lord Lucan disappeared into thin air, never to be seen again, after the brutal murder of Sandra Rivett, nanny to his three children. This controversial two-part dramatisation of the case – neither the Lucan nor Rivett family wanted to be involved – stars Rory Kinnear sporting a bushy moustache as gambler ‘Lucky’ Lucan. It follows the tragic chain of events set in motion by the breakdown of his marriage to wife Veronica, widely assumed to be the intended murder victim, with a bitter custody battle the trigger for the fatal events of November 7, 1974. Christopher Eccleston and Catherine McCormack co-star.
Sports Personality Of The Year At 60, BBC1, 9pm
From athlete Chris Chataway in 1954 to cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins last year, the roll of honour on the BBC’s Sports Personality Of The Year features greats from events ranging from Formula One to boxing and football to swimming, with a fair sprinkling of figure skaters, cricketers and the odd royal or two. Gary Lineker takes a nostalgic jog through the nation’s sporting back pages, with past winners David Beckham and Sebastian Coe – whatever happened to them? – among those recalling their giddy moment of glory.
Misfits, E4, 10pm
The sight of nice Rudy lactating is just one of the oddball pleasures to be savoured as the curtain comes down on the orange-boiler-suited community service superpower drama after five inventive and largely joyous seasons. Robert Sheehan, Iwan Rheon, Antonia Thomas and Karla Crome are just four of the young actors to benefit from a career leg-up in this show – and here’s hoping it’s not long before the comedically gifted current star Joe Gilgun lights up the screen again.
