Game shows are popular all around the world, with millions of viewers tuning in to daytime television to watch them. Hundreds of applicants wait for months to find out if their application was successful in the hopes they can appear on their favourite show.
Many practise for months on end, filling their minds with knowledge so that they’re prepared to take on the show. After all, for many of these contestants, this opportunity could change their lives for the better.
But what happens when it all goes wrong? All of us at home and the studio audience get a good laugh from it. Let’s take a look at some of those hilarious moments from our favourite game shows.
Deal or No Deal – The empty box
With Noel Edmonds as host, there were bound to be some hilarious moments. The game show Deal or No Deal first aired in 2005 with Noel hosting all 13 seasons. Nine players in total won the coveted prize of £250,000 with 29 entering the ‘1p Club’ – a nickname given to those who walk away with the smallest prize.
One by one the boxes were opened, revealing the amounts inside which are then removed from the game. But in one very memorable moment, David asked Kirsty to open box number 2 to reveal… nothing. In a moment of hilarity, Edmonds was stumped to find nothing in the box and offered David the option to restart the game. Although the game continued, it is still remembered as one of the funniest moments in ‘Deal’. Although the show is off air you can still play Deal or No Deal games online.
The Chase – an unfortunate series of names
Bradley Walsh is known for having one of TVs most infectious laughs. Giggling like a teenager, contestants are often distracted by Walsh’s laugh but it makes for great watching. Players take on a Chaser and in this case contestants came face-to-face with ‘The Beast’.
In a bid to win £100,000, contestant Tim had to answer a series of question to outrun the chaser. Although in what was a very serious moment, Walsh’s giggling managed to turn the atmosphere on its head in the studio for all-out-laughter.
“What is the cartoon character, Andy Capp, known as in Germany?” Watch the video below to find out why these answers had the audience, viewers and contestants uncontrollably laughing.
Countdown – rude words
A classic, filled with studious competitors and top-class knowledge. But these hilarious bloopers can happen to the best of us at times and during Countdown is no exception. Although the scenario has happened a few times, we’re going to look at the classic with former host, Carol Vorderman.
In a letters round, Vorderman was asked to place up a consonant, a vowel and then another vowel. The letter spelt out the word ‘poo’ which had the entire audience and Vorderman in stitches. Then, after another consonant was requested, the word ‘poof’ was spelt. Much to the humour of the audience, but thankfully it wasn’t the letter P!
