The Voice UK ratings show format still has a big problem

The Voice UK is already gearing up for another series with 2015 auditions underway, but the show still has some huge problems to overcome.

The BBC series has been renewed for a further two more years, seeing it stay on air until at least 2016 but the latest ratings suggest the format is still in need of much work.

All three series of the show have suffered the same issue of viewers tuning out in their droves as soon as the auditions are over which is a big problem.

Not only should the live finals be the climatic end to the series but they should also act as a platform for launching the eventual winner.

As it is, none of the Voice UK champs have gone on to much with this year’s latest – Jermain Jackman – only scraping the Top 75 with his winner’s track, the worst debut chart performance of any winner to date.

The numbers from the ratings show the problem clearly: Every series has lost at least 1.5 million viewers between the blind auditions and live shows.

2014′s run kicked off with an average audience of 8 million for the first stage but the three live shows managed just over 6 million, and that’s despite no competition from reality telly rival Britain’s Got Talent for the first time in its three-year history.

The frustrating thing is that series elsewhere in the world have made significant changes to the format which have proved successful but the BBC has yet to try the same.

In the US, for example, acts are eliminated based purely on who has the least votes rather than just culling one from each team.

Kylie Minogue has already walked away from the coaching line up after just one series, so clearly the show needs a major overhaul to get audiences and coaches back on board.
