Comedy performer Matt Lucas has criticised West End musicals and plays as “overly simplistic” and “pretentious”.
He said that Broadway was currently better than London in terms of its theatre offering.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “London is full of overly-simplistic story-less musicals and overly-complicated baffling pretentious plays at the moment. Broadway is winning.”
Lucas has previously appeared in a special staging of the musical Les Miserables, to mark its 25th anniversary. In 2009 he also starred in Prick Up Your Ears.
His comments drew a mixed reaction on the social media site.
Little Britain’s Matt Lucas and The Inbetweeners’ star Greg Davies are joining the cast of Doctor Who for this year’s Christmas special.
